Why is Bush worried about avian flu?
He hasn't done a thing to take care of the shortage of the annual flu vaccine. Either the government will have to guarantee purchase of enough doses OR the government will have to get in to the vaccine making business itself. We're still in the same situation we were in a couple years ago when English government inspectors closed down the private facility making half the flu vaccine for the US. I guess we can talk about martial law but heaven forbid we interfere with free enterprise!

1. He can't run away from it and protect himself.
If it shows up in this country, he's gonna go to Uncle Dick's "undisclosed location," probably a hermetically sealed bubble.

If anyone knows hermetically sealed bubbles, Little Georgie would be the one.

3. It is a real threat, however....
Shrub will not respond as this strain of flu is deadly, and will most likely hit blue states. His plan is to declare Marshal Law and shoot anyone that tries to leave quarantine.

Ever see the movie "Outbreak"?

4. I think I might know why
This is one chain of events where maybe Rove et. al. has told him that there is no scenario where he could blame the Democrats and get away with it.

5. Because he spent all summer reading a book about the 1918 Pandemic
and people are concerned so he can get into full blown "TERRA TERRA TERRA LOOK OVER THERE" mode.

7. Well , he should get people looking over there.
Terror incidents are spectacular but tend to be limited. A world wide pandemic from avian flu or another flu is practically a given yet we seem to be totally unprepared. For example - how do you feed people when a region is quarantined? On a related topic; California's "big one" is another day closer. What are the plans for getting food and water to the survivors afterwards?

22. I so wanted a reporter to ask him to recall the most

compelling chapter or the author.

He didn't read that book ---he doesn't read.

Karen probably threw that in ---

Where was Helen today?

24. it may be a potential problem, but he did NOT read a book
that's just wild speculation based on his announced reading list. I no more believe that than that he wipes his own ass or chews his own food.

The Flu thing is a way to do it....ya heard um...Its the only way to effectively quarantine an area so the fluy don't spread to Crawford....

18. My thoughts exactly...
... it's simply a way for him to use the army within US borders to consolidate his power. Given the number of people who marched the other week, they are probably starting to get a bit nervous.

23. Re Use of Military as a mean to retain control of Gov't... A Coup of some
sort....

Is the Mil in on the Power Grab? Will they kill to prop Bush? Here in America? If Yes, we are in deep shit. I can only hope there be a solution to avoid a de facto dictatorship...that enough of the Mil can see the wrongheadedness of such a move and prevent the Rape of America in such a public manner.

17. Well, there's no proof that I know of, but wasn't there a rumor that
Pappy Bush had something to do with releasing the AIDS epidemic. These are some powerful people who think they control everything and I wouldn't put it past them to release the Avian Flu in certain areas.
