'Let me prove I'm Peron daughter'

Court to rule on plea for former President to be exhumed for DNA testing

SHE says that she is the only child of Juan Domingo Perón, and for 12 years she has been trying to prove it. Martha Holgado is demanding that the body of the former Argentine President be exhumed so that DNA tests can prove that he is her father.

But her case has met strong resistance from Perón’s third wife, María Estela Martínez de Perón, known as Isabelita, who has appealed against the ruling last month by Judge Mirtha Ilundain ordering that his remains be exhumed.

A decision on the appeal is expected this week and may finally reveal the truth and end the decades-long battle over one of the country’s most enduring political figures.

Perón, three times President of Argentina and founder of the Justicialista Party, was also married three times, but according to the official story, never had children. Some historians and biographers have even suggested that this titan of Argentine politics was unable to father children. But according to Señora Holgado, rumours of his sterility are untrue and, at 71, she claims to be the proof.
