The degree to which one blames the unknowing individual Republicans who may not have the time or inclination to understand what they support, and what they have become, is in direct proportion to which one hold culpabale the Germans of the 1930s for supporting what they did.

I am somewhat ambivalent about the matter...now that I more fully understand the forces that made Nazi Germany what it was, I feel more sympathy for the 1935 Germans or the 2005 Amerikans.

I once worked for the Repug party - back in the late 60s - early 70s. While working for the party all of us young staffers began to realize that the conservatives were taking over and all of us eventually left the party because the party was leaving us.

Anyway, most nights after work we would all gather for cocktails. Our opening nightly toast was "The only good Republican is a dead Republican" - then we would laugh nervously and look around to make sure no one else heard us.

22. Let's establish the difference between Republican voters and . . .

Republican politicians.

There are plenty of Republican politicians -- that I've never met -- who I hate passionately, for whom almost no awful fate would seem too extreme. I have a list, and I'm sure most DUers do too.

But I think most Republican voters are simply deceived. They vote on what they read in the papers, see on TV, hear from their friends. Clearly, their basic beliefs diverge (perhaps strongly) from most of the beliefs expressed on this site. And always will. We still need to live with each others' beliefs.

But I don't think they believe that the poor should be screwed, that aggressive war is a good thing, that the rich should be favored above all else, or that votes should be stolen with impunity.

They don't believe that the things I've listed above are really going on. They think the poor should be succored but not coddled; that the war in Iraq is defensive and not aggressive (less of 'em all the time on that one); that tax cuts benefit them even if they're not rich; and that the stories about vote theft are simply untrue. Most voters (lefty and righty) are sincere, harried, mostly non-political, and easily led. That's what they select leaders for, after all.

The politicians, on the other hand, know exactly what they're doing. And when I consider them, I really wished I believed in hell because I could comfort myself that justice would eventually be done to them.
