"Bush military bird flu role slammed"
Bush is a proven liar .why trust him on the bird flu? Let the health care professionals be funded correctly and let them do their jobs..Let the US Military do its job as soldiers and not as police agents for a corrupt political hack like bush.

Bush military bird flu role slammed

"WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A call by President George W. Bush for Congress to give him the power to use the military in law enforcement roles in the event of a bird flu pandemic has been criticized as akin to introducing martial law.

Bush said aggressive action would be needed to prevent a potentially disastrous U.S. outbreak of the disease that is sweeping through Asian poultry and which experts fear could mutate to pass between humans.

The Posse Comitatus Act of 1878 bans the military from participating in police-type activity on U.S. soil. But Dr. Irwin Redlener, associate dean of Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health and director of its National Center for Disaster Preparedness, told The Associated Press the president's suggestion was dangerous.

Giving the military a law enforcement role would be an "extraordinarily Draconian measure" that would be unnecessary if the nation had built the capability for rapid vaccine production, ensured a large supply of anti-virals like Tamiflu and not allowed the degradation of the public health system. "The translation of this is martial law in the United States," Redlener said."

3. Somehow they thought far enough ahead to get where they are
today - that is controlling all three branches of government and pandering to enough RW fundie nutjobs to ensure control for the foreseeable future.

11. Heads exploding in Freeperville.
Is it just me, or is our President looking for more and more situations in which the Commander-in-Chief should be allowed to use American military forces on our own soil?

I think it's a case of "If you all you have is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail."

It ain't just you.

This should be a last-ditch emergency proposal - NG should be used first. A lot more people died from government last century than died in the great flu pandemic.

To: Windsong
Ridiculous....
" Bird flu has killed more than 60 people in four Asian nations since late 2003 and has been found in birds in Russia and Europe."

Let's get some perspective:
How many have died from the 'plain old' flu in this time period?
From Drunk drivers?
From food poisoning?
From an infection after stubbing their toe?

Can we mobilize the military against the citizens if there are mass toe stubbings?

To: areafiftyone
I think the President needs to rethink some things. He's going to be explaining this comment and Ms. Miers for the next month.

To: NJ_gent
I wonder if it wouldn't be a bit more effective to let the local police do the enforcement and focus on medical preparedness: prevention, treatments, distribution networks and suchlike before we end up with de facto martial law.

To: Artemis Webb
Bush: "Trust Me".

Really?

To: areafiftyone; billbears
30 people died out of 1.6 billion over a two year span and he wants Congressional pre-approval to use the military to restrict the rights of Americans to freely move?

Bullfarts.

To: areafiftyone
Just image the outrage on FreeRepublic if Bill Clinton would have asked for such power.

To: Artemis Webb
If your kids or wife is dying..along with half a million other Americans in the next pandemic I am "just wondering" what your thoughts will be then.
I'll be praying for our overlords in Washington to declare martial law and take good care of me, of course. Without them, I'm helpless.

To: areafiftyone
Someone needs to tell Big Government George that when he swore an oath to defend the Constitution from all enemies both foreign and domestic that included himself.
To: NJ_gent
It's not just you. It's beginning to make me uneasy, to say the least.

13. Gimme Power, heh heh
If bush succeeds in grabbing this power.....

It's all over 'cept the cryin'

I personally, have no faith in flu shots. I have read that they contain high amounts of mercury.
My mother will also not get a flu shot -- because of Dr. Mercola.

http://www.mercola.com/2005/sep/20/new_flu_vaccine_is_loaded_with_mercury.htm

New Flu Vaccine is Loaded With Mercury

GlaxoSmithKline's new flu vaccine Fluarix was approved Wednesday for sale in the USA this fall under an accelerated FDA approval process. Another flu vaccine manufacturer, Chiron, moved closer to getting their license back; it was suspended when their flu vaccine was found to be contaminated with bacteria.

Chiron's license was suspended by British regulators in October, and the FDA barred U.S. distribution of the vaccine, cutting the nation's expected supply of flu vaccine in half.

GlaxoSmithKline expects to distribute 8 million doses of Fluarix and will begin shipping immediately. Chiron, if its vaccine is re-approved, could supply 18 million to 26 million doses of Fluvirin.

USA Today August 31, 2005

Dr. Mercola's Comment:

snip--
How is it possible that they can approve vaccines that have a preservative that has been outlawed for six years? Last year I ran an article that documented that flu vaccines still contain mercury. How can the US federal government justify this morally reprehensible behavior and expose your children and you to this well documented neurotoxic poison?

The "Mad Hatter" from Alice in Wonderland wasn't just an idle fancy. In fact, hatters in England went insane with astonishing frequency a couple of hundred years ago, until "mad hatter" became a cliché. Why? Mercury salts were used to make felt for fancy hats.

Mercury exposure can cause a devastating array of problems, including:

Multiple Sclerosis
Central Nervous System Disorders
Autism
Alzheimer's Disease
Is this really something you want injected into yourself, and your children?

Other ways to avoid getting the flu without taking dangerous shots include:

Eating a healthy diet by eliminating sugar
Exercising
Getting enough rest
Eating garlic regularly
Not letting stress become overwhelming
Washing your hands

So.... what would bush have the military do if there was a pandemic?
Point their guns at the sick?
Lock them in the sports arenas?

Looks like he wants to spread it country wide now. This is scary and I hope and pray there are still some in Congress with some common sense to know that this is not only total insanity but extremely ominous! :grr:

Thought its kinda nifty that the sgooges at CNN gave jr a meek slap on his greedy lil wrists.

Over 78 dead microbiologits in past few yrs.

Think of the anthrax vacine and the soldiers gettin sick .

that is treachery of the worst kind.

If the Truth ever gets out of the pentagon dungeons about DU and anthrax vaccines..then it will be a big surprise for the chickenhawks some day..many active duty personnel do not like
