***Please Read if Union*** RE: last years UFCW strike in California.
Edited on Wed Oct-05-05 04:23 PM by tjwash
It seems that Albertsons, who refused to negotiate with the union during last years strike, is closing many of their stores, is firing the union employees in Southern California, and opening up Bristol Farms stores in their place.

This is a must read by any UFCW, or any Union members in California.

Here is the article

Excerpt:

Albertsons' corporate greed is threatening the livelihoods of its workers and communities where they live AGAIN. The company is closing stores and firing employees in Southern California--only to open up Albertsons-Bristol Farms stores in their place!

This is happening despite last year's disruptive four-and-a-half month strike in Southern California where Albertsons played a major role in hurting communities. It's unconscionable for Albertsons to close its stores--and open up new ones--in order
to evade its contract obligation with workers.

Communities supported Albertsons' workers when the company tried to eliminate their health care benefits. Apparently, Albertsons needs to hear that message again. Sign the petition below telling Albertsons not to fire its workers! Sign this petition either via email (please see directions below) or via the web at:

1. Kroger, Safeway, and Albertson's are the three largest...
supermarket operations in the nation. They need to be broken up via Anti-Trust laws.

2. The supermarkets here will probably get some help...
...from the governater. He's already taken shots at the Teachers and Nurses union.

4. yup - Kroger is Fred Meyer, Ralphs, Smith's, Food4Less, in other words...
Everything not owned by Safeway and/or Albertsons, which own the rest.

3. all the more reason to shop at independent grocers
The ones with union employees and/or that are family run businesses.

5. A lot of people have been doing that lately.
Since the strike, people have stopped going to Vons, and Albertsons. The greedy execs saved the money they would have saved on paying out bennies, and lost it back ten-fold on business that will never walk through their doors again.

6. You also give back to your community and probably have healthier produce
Supermarkets are big money. People sometimes don't realize that the average supermarket takes in more in one month than many businesses do in six.

7. Yep.
Which makes it all that much more infuriating, when they go out of their way to try and bust the unions out of there.

Funny thing is, the people here started going to the little independents, not exclusively because of the strike. They started going to independent supermarkets like Kiels or Food 4 Less, that were closer to their houses, and just got so used to going there, and they just never went back to the other stores after the strike was over.

8. Say no to Osco Drugstores too!
There are no Albertsons where I live, but lots of Osco's, which are owned by Albertsons. So I don't go near Osco even though there's one near me. We gotta stick together, brothers and sisters, because times are tough and getting tougher! Go IBEW!!!

10. Albertson's/Jewel is one of the worst of a bad lot.
Corporate control of the food supply. Scary stuff. At least we have Trader Joe's. :tinfoilhat:
