NOAM CHOMSKY: Wanted a leader for America
Edited on Wed Oct-05-05 06:56 PM by Tace
By Noam Chomsky

10/05/05 "ICH" -- AS THE survivors of Hurricane Katrina try to piece their lives back together, it is all the clearer that a long-gathering storm of misguided policies and priorities preceded the tragedy.

Government failures at home and the war in Iraq found a confluence in Katrina’s wake that graphically illustrates the need for fundamental social change, lest we suffer worse disasters in the future.

In a pre-9/11 report, the Federal Emergency Management Agency had listed a major hurricane in New Orleans as one of the three most likely catastrophes to strike the United States. The others: a terrorist attack in New York and an earthquake in San Francisco.

New Orleans had become an urgent priority at FEMA since January, when the agency’s now-departed director Michael Brown returned from touring the tsunami devastation in Asia.

1. I don't know
This doesn't seem to me something that Chomsky would write. I'm quite familiar with his work. The language and emphasis seems suspicious to me, but it's just borderline enough to be possible. The title seems especially suspicious. Chomsky's never been all about leaders.

2. Interesting -- I Thought It Was Unusual For Chomsky As Well
I'll forward a link to this thread to Information Clearinghouse, for his information. ICH is generally a very good source.

I'll also contact Chomsky to see if this is his. I'll let you know what I find out, although it may take a few days. Cheers.

3. it seemed very un-Chomsky-like to me too
it's all true, but it's very ordinary and I wonder why Chomsky would even bother writing it?

6. Chomsky: Khaleej Times Piece Was Distributed By New York Times Syndicate
Shortly after I started this thread yesterday, Tom at Information Clearinghouse changed the attribution for the story to "Khaleej Times." Chomsky responded to an e-mail saying that Khaleej Times gets his stuff from New York Times syndicate.
