2. If we elect some Dems with some balls and some spine. Not if we elect
more pro-war DLC Democrats.

3. It takes 67 vote to convict an impeached president....
Edited on Thu Oct-06-05 08:51 PM by Rowdyboy
At best, we will have 50 Democratic senators in 2007. Even if Republicans joined us, and Bush was convicted, you still have a nightmare....

Impeach Bush, Get Cheney
Impeach Cheney, Get Hastert
Impeach Hastert, Get Stevens
Impeach Stevens, Get Rice
Impeach Rice, Get Snow
Impeach Snow, Get Rumsfeld
Impeach Rumsfeld, Get Gonzales

Are you starting to get the picture?

9. Actually
it takes 67 votes to CONVICT.

It takes a majority of the House of Representatives (217) to impeach.

17. No problem...
your bigger point still stands - that impeaching Bush won't get us much of anything. President Cheney? President Hastert? No thanks.

10. A correction, a smiple majority is needed to impeach
Edited on Thu Oct-06-05 09:00 PM by never cry wolf
A simple majority is needed in the house for articles of impeachment, this is equivalent of an indictment. Impeached = indicted.

It takes a 2/3 super majority in the senate trial for conviction. Two presidents have been impeached, none convicted.

Of course, one of those impeachments was a sham witch hunt so really only one impeachment. If bunnypants is impeached it will still be only one because he's not really president.

18. That will all be up to the Dems
With around 30-some percent approval ratings and all the criminal indictments, the Dems ought to win in a walk. Never in the history of this country has a party survived in the majority with those kinds of set-backs. If we can't gain both the House and the Senate there's something radically wrong with this picture. If we can't gain both House and Senate then the only thing that history will rememeber is how the Dems blew a perfect opportunity and let a fascist party remain in control.

20. In 1975, 1985, 0r 1995 you would have been right...
However, its 2005. Never before in American history have so many House districts been gerrymandered. Its nearly impossibly for Democrats to win enough seats to take control of the House, at least until the census of 2010.

In the senate, we have 18 seats at stake, they have 15. In a landslide, we might increase our margin to 24-9, giving us a 51-49 edge. That would be a miracle to equal the parting of the Red Sea by Moses.

The "perfect opportunity" you speak of does not exist anywhere but in fantasy.

22. 35% isn't enough support to win dog catcher.

The 2006 election is the Dem's to lose. They could win it in a walk if they take the issues and run with them. A simpleton could run the campaign as long as he or she didn't try to take the campaign to the right, to appease, or to play it safe. No need for safety at this time. Candidates need to grab the brass ring.

Look at how things panned out in the Ohio special election. In a rock solid Republican district, the Repug had to spend big money and compaign hard to win. If Dems play their cards right it could be that way all over the country. But they have to want it.

I'm talking about taking advantage of a unique situation here. The strategy works in 1934, 1960, 1968, 1999, and in 2006.

12. If we took control of the Senate, Stevens is no longer President Pro-Temp
Also, the Speaker of the House might be a Dem too.

16. Okay, agreed, if we can ditch Bush and Cheney (without Bush replacing
Cheney, and if we take back the House (God how sweet that would be), I could go for President Pelosi. President Tempore Byrd would be okay, too. Its a beautiful idea, but I just don't see it happening.

However, as they say, "a girl can dream"

6. In Order To Win Both Houses, KKKarl Must Go
We can win back the Senate with KKKarl still in there but not the House, IMHO. That's why news of his fourth Fitzgerald grand jury appearance was so welcome.

13. Lieberman does act like a Repug.
But I'd like to think that he'd vote to convict Shrubby.
Feinstein would most definitely vote to convict.

19. Look
I think the chances of a Democratic Takeover In 2006 Is looking more
like a realistic chance. Even some Republicans are starting to get
worried on that chance. However we have no chance to remove Bush. We
could Impeach him If we take the House back but we will have no chance to remove him In the senate. You need 67 votes. No Republicans
are going to join us however having Impeachment on his record would be good.

21. We can always hope that either there will be 67 Dems in the Senate
after 2006, or that Bush's transgressions will be so bad that even the Repubs will vote to convict.

A girl can dream...........
