A little-noticed or dissected Bush comment on Miers

There's one particular quote from Bush the other day, when he defended his choice of Miers for the SC.

This comment really troubles me, but I don't hear it being discussed. It's when he said "I know her well enough to be able to say that she's not going to change, that 20 years from now she'll be the same person with the same philosophy that she is today."

The problem is, do we really want someone on the Supreme Court, who is not going to change? Who's thinking is not going to evolve?

Where would we be as a country today, if the Supreme Court had not reversed its own Plessy v. Ferguson decision? During Brown v. Board, the Court realized it had erred in Plessy v. Ferguson.

So the point being, sometimes a person needs to change and evolve in their thinking.

It is amazing that he actually thinks not growing as a human is a good thing. Guess he really wants them all in his image after all.

Miers has worshipped as a Catholic and attended Episcopalian and Presbyterian services before joining Valley View Christian Church which she just recently left.

7. This Is Religion Industry Fundamentalism At Its Very Finest

It's what they look for. God is changeless and so, then, must they be. They are literalists. They really, REALLY believe the world is seven thousand years old and the dinosaurs perished in the flood becuase they were too stubborn to get on the Ark, just like the unicorns. They really, REALLY believe humans die because Eve was nekkid and had a conversation with a gossipy water moccasin. They really, REALLY believe some bearded, flea-infested prophet made the sun stand still (never mind the cosmological ramifications of a still-standing earth).

And because they believe all this, no one's ideas can change or grow. Intellectual or emotional growth is heresy in the American Religion Industry.

That's why the religious right is the single greatest danger America faces today. More dangerous than Osama bin Forgotten. More dangerous that Abu BooBoo Whatever. More dangerous than any tinhorn dictator. Because none of our external enemies have the ability to destroy ALL of America. The Religion Industry fundamentalists do.

8. Yeah, I 've thought about that

a ton of times. The thing that B*sh doesn't get is the subtle conversion that judges go through after taking office. They all transform themselves as they settle in to a life where they are not adversaries or advocates. Some have difficulty with the transformation--and when they do the neocons bash them for legislating from the bench and parties to a proceeding bash them for being biased.
Harriet seems to have had a short period of social activism on the Dallas City Council--at least in terms of advocating for redistricting. Then she seems to have rocketed her way into the religious neocon modality. What that says is that her track record is one of changing attitudes and values. So I don't get how the Chimp concludes he knows how she will be 20 yrs. from now.

9. That's the definition of fundamentalism.

Religious or political fundamentalism is based on the premise that "the law" is already known. All that is needed in life is for one to strictly follow the given law.

This is the underlying principle of the 'strict constructionist' or 'originalist' propaganda. Political fundamentalists (who call themselves 'conservatives') pull the scam that all knowledge resided in the Original Word of the Constitution. Anything they don't like is derided as "legislating from the bench" and criticized as deviating from "original intent."

Conservatives' real scam is that they have appointed themselves as the True Diviners of The Word -- both in politics and religion. They basically think they are privileged with a mainline to the Divine.

In fact, fundamentalists feel so privileged, they think they can make up their own facts, history, meaning of words... the list is long; but the bottom line is that they feel so superior that they feel driven to make the rest of the world in their image.
