8. Actually, it's pretty well accepted that it has. |
|
A young girl in Asia got it from domestic fowl, then her mother and aunt who weren't exposed to farm birds got it while caring for her.

10. Not so fast ............ there are several instances, IIRC, where it HAS |
|
spread within a household, from the index case to family members who could not have got it from anywhere other than from the index case. But all these do have an avian source that infected the index case, so it is not yet able to maintain propagation p2p beyond the first generation.
It's not Captain Trips just yet. But it is VERY close.

I read that they had not confirmed p2p spread. I wish I could remember the source, as maybe it was out of date.

12. Not sure there is evidence for that... |
|
Scientists do not even know if it has mutated at all toward human to human transfer since discovered. They note similarities with the reconstituted 1918 flu, but the mutations that may have occurred are not relevent to future mutations. From what I have read.
In reality not alot has changed over the last 8 years. Some birds turned up in western Russia and there was a recent outbreak of bird to human, which looks like it peaked last March.
Vigilance is necessary, and I note that a vaccine has been developed. Production capacity needs to be ramped up to get it distributed. Hopefully the government can coordinate this more effectively.
I think the recent attention has more to do with Bush reading that book about the 1918 virus over the summer. He was probably so excited he got through a whole book he had to share.

20. Maybe you ought to check out what's happening in Indonesia.... |
|
...and maybe you can do a little research on why China kept the media out of a certain part of their country earlier this year.
By the way, the 1918 Pandemic started when a mild version made a lot of people sick about six months before the main wave hit.

3. How does it get from bird to person? |
|
Do people and wild birds make contact that often?
I mean, I've got a birdfeeder at the window and sometimes Morning Doves will hop on my finger, but I know that's pretty rare.

4. my understanding -- viruses evolve pretty fast. adapt and jump. |
|
this virus has such a high kill rate that it *might* burn itself out. or it might not. it might jump.

5. Usually from wild birds to domestic fowl |
|
and even more often from bird to pig to person.
There's a good PBS DVD that your public library probably has "killer flu" from the secrets of the dead series.

You can't make this shit up. How do people watch and listen to Bush and find him inspiring? I will never understand the appeal.

Bush honestly thinks he's being really intelligent in his speeches.
"That's what we've got to worry about! Bird to person...to person!"
And he was so pleased with himself from remembering that main point seemingly from some flashcards he was briefed with.
I wouldn't be surprised if there weren't pictures involved in a chart.

13. Hasn't that first jump already occurred? |
|
Bird-man.
Isn't that what's happened in Asia?
The virus must have mutated into a form more likely to infect humans, but such transmissions are rare. OK, I get that.
Now here's where I need some help.
Further mutations of either bird-bird virus or bird-man virus may lead to a new virus which could be easily transmitted from man-man. And that's what we're talking about.
Have I got this right?
TIA

People who come down with this are exposed to birds.
Since it transmits between birds, it would be dangerous if urban or migratory birds started passing it around and rocketing it across the country.
More dangerous would be transmission from human to human, but it wouldn't necessarily take that if flocks of birds...pigeons, ducks.. contracted it and then managed to get into large populations of humans.
Viruses are fiendishly adaptive organisms. Since they are small, they evolve lightning-fast on the cellular level in comparison to more complex species.
