CHRISTOPHER WALKEN ON AAR NOW!!!!!!
Edited on Thu Oct-06-05 11:37 PM by noahmijo
He's bein very hilarious (satirical) talking about how we should invade Morroco. The producer just ran into CW and hustled him into the studio.

13. That has to drive you crazy!
My husband went to Tulane so I learned a long time ago how to say the name of your wonderful city. Now it sends shivers up my spine when I hear New OrLEANS.

15. Especially when really bad actors TRY to say it right.
Walken did alright, so I'm guessing he's from New York. The dialect we share actually has a name: Brooklynese. :)

"... chocolatey goodness all around." LOL!

16. My parents have never said it that way.
They grew up there, their parents grew up there, everyone they new grew up there. They claim no one said N'awlins. More like, Neworlens.

17. Actually, it's "Nuôlenz."
Sorry, DU doesn't allow for IPA.

N'awlins is only a conventional spelling. Try Googling it.

In what neighborhood did your parents grow up?

Did you know there are many sub-dialects in New Orleans? It is a subject I studied in grad linguistics here in New Orleans. :)

22. That's about right. I don't remember my phonetics, but
does the hatted o thingie have a slight r sound? Cause they say the R, they just don't dwell on it much.

My mother grew up on Magazine Street. She rode her bike to Audoban Park, so probably not too far from there. Her father owned a hardware store, but I forget the name. My father grew up somewhere closer to the lake. Forchet Street, or something like that. I don't know the area well. He says it was about six blocks from the 17th Street Canal.

I had relatives and friends all through New Orleans, but I didn't know the names of the neighborhoods, or the streets. I remember visiting great aunts who lived in those old back-to-back duplexes, and others who lived in old houses. Most of them had passed away before I learned to drive, so I never remembered the streets or neighborhoods. You know how it is when you're a kid, you just ride where they drive you.

My mother's family had a lot of German and English, my father had Italian and English. Mother has one of those New Orleans accents that almost sounds Bostonian, if you know what I mean. My father always tried to sound more Cajun than he is, so I don't know what his accent is.

I know what you mean about hearing your city name pronounced wrong. I grew up near Biloxi. I've been cringing a lot lately! Even the ones who know it isn't Bi-lock-si get it slightly wrong.
