When are the soldiers going to have enough? |
|
When are they going to say enough? Surely it is clear to many now. What will it take?

1. the soldiers cannot say no |

unless the specific order is illegal and they can prove it under the UCMJ.
Truth be told the leadership should have resigned en masse... instead the ones who could not do it resigned their commissions and the rest staid
But the individual troop does not have that option... that is why you and I are their voices.

do we live in where someone literally cannot do something? We should be free enough to leave the army if we need to. I know "should" and reality are quite different here, but since when are VOLUNTEER soldiers PRISONERS?

6. When they sign on the dotted line |
|
It should be taken as a business contract. When you sign on the dotted line, you take responsibility for all the consequences that could happen as a result of joining the military, including going to war and dying.
It's "volunteer" as far as choosing to sign on the dotted line. It's not the same as being compelled to serve in a draft lottery. However, once you've signed, you can be compelled to do things you may not necessarily agree with. They will simply argue that if you did not like it, then you should not have signed the contract. The devil is in the details.

2. They've already had more than enough. |
|
It's the politicians who are afraid to admit political failure who haven't had enough yet.
But this constitution ratification business is more or less the last political straw when it ends in failure and the long anticipated civil war breaks out.

3. The family members need to speak out |

One uncle is. In the LAT this morning I read that his niece was promised $30,000 college fund and would NOT be shipped to Iraq. She signed. She was shipped out the next week. The uncle is furious and making some noise to get her back.

I'd like to read the story. The scenario you describe is not possible. First, once you sign up for the military, it generally takes a couple of weeks just to get you off to basic training. Once that's complete, then you have to go to initial training (A School, tech school, Advanced Individual training). Only then do you actually get assigned to a unit.
Plus, the girl should take a little personal responsibility. If she joined the Army, and believed it when she was told that she wouldn't go to Iraq, that's just stupid. The recruiters are selling something. They are not going to tell you all the bad points. Do a little research for pity's sake.

It must have been after basic training. I think it was a letter to the editor but I've thrown out this week's newspapers. I searched the LAT archives on line, but couldn't find it. I remember thinking the same thing. Why didn't she get something in writing? Oh well.

8. When the politicians say so... |
|
Same in every war. It not them or their kids over there, so what's the rush?
When the revolution comes, I plan to suggest that we offer to ship them off to Iraq as an alternative to the guillotine.
