Is the US totally incompetent in foriegn policy?
Edited on Fri Oct-07-05 06:55 AM by Solon
As far as I can tell, the ONLY good foriegn policies decisions we made in the past century are rebuilding Europe and helping start up the U.N. I mean think about it, from our "adventurism" in securing assets for our country's corporations at the beginning of the century in Latin America, to the Iraq War today, when have we ever not suffered consequences for these bad decisions?

Think about it, the adventurism in Latin America led to depressed economical areas in these countries, leading to a large amount of resentment down there, along with security threats, Cuban Missle Crisis ring a bell?

What about Mosaddeq's Iran, a democratically elected leader that we overthrew, and thanks to that, we ended up with the Shah's Iran and basic tyranny and destabilization in that region of the world.

Add to that the support we had for the Baath Party in Iraq, and support for Saddam when he gained power later, plus the war we armed BOTH sides for during the 80s.

Speaking of the 80s, Afganistan rings a bell, oh yeah, a guy called Osama Bin Laden was fighting the Soviets, and low and behold, we funded him, his buddies, and his buddies' cousins as well, ideology be damned. Connected with Persian Gulf one, and you got 9/11.

OK, lets not even talk about Vietnam, clusterfuck I believe is the proper word for that.

Of course, then we go to Persian Gulf war 1, another clusterfuck, where we change sides a couple of times, did we care or not whether Kuwait was invaded again? I know that Saddam didn't know, hell he thought he was our good buddy at the time, that just teaches every other despot a lesson, stay on our good side, or else.

Now we move on to the War against the Terrorism/Muslims/Freedom Fighters/Poor People/Everyone. Another Clusterfuck, hell, call it the Beginnings of World War Three, who knows, Bush is defined by his fuckups, why should this "war" be any different?

I mean think about this, the CIA fucks up SO much that they actually have a term for shit like this: "Blowback". Doesn't that just make you feel SO good to be a citizen of this country?

Me, personally, I think we aren't even competent enough to have so much as a military at all, it seems much more likely that keeping said military just tempts presidents like the current one to use them, why have it at all? Who the hell is going to invade us? Canada? Mexico? Why would they do that?

The thing is this, this is not a Bush Problem, it is an American Problem. Bush is simply a symptom of a much larger disease that has permeated through our national conscience. That is a disease of paranoia, fear, and billigerent nationalism. We are the psychopath who is standing in the front yard in his underwear, holding a loaded .38, who already shot two of his neighbors, and threatening the others. The question is, how is this situation going to end, are we going to take our meds, and disarm ourselves, or are we going to be wrestled to the ground and disarmed, or are we going to get shot by the cops, or another neighbor. Our choice at this point, the question is, are we willing to go to that step?
