U.S. Intercepts Terrorist Correspondence

Friday October 7, 2005 1:31 PM

WASHINGTON (AP) - The United States has obtained a letter from one terrorist leader to another that discusses plans to force a U.S. withdrawal from Iraq, create an Islamic state there and then spread war to neighboring countries, Pentagon officials said.

Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman would only broadly characterize the intercepted letter, which he said was written by Osama bin Laden deputy Ayman al-Zawahri to the leader of al-Qaida in Iraq, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.

Whitman would not say where, when or how it was obtained, or who intercepted it, but he said the Pentagon is confident it is authentic.

Whitman said the letter demonstrates ``that there is this detailed planning and intent on the part of the insurgents in Iraq to one day control that country and to really try to extend their extremism to neighboring countries. It demonstrates to me they clearly understand the importance and significance of the battle in Iraq right now.''

In the letter al-Zawahri urges Zarqawi - who has declared war on Iraq's Shiite Muslim majority - to avoid bombing mosques and slaughtering hostages to avoid alienating the masses, Whitman said.

5. Not Dean. Kucinich is al Qaeda's #2 in the US
I thought we all knew this.

And you know the story referenced here is true. After all, in 2001 the Pentagon said it would lie to anyone it felt it needed to lie to. But then they reversed themselves and proclaimed that they wouldn't lie after all. So you can completely trust them and their vague and completely unsubstantiated letter between 2 quasi-fictitious people.

They're with the government, of course, so they're only here to help.

7. Too true, on all points
Surely the pentagon wouldn't lie to us.

And I know the Bush administration wouldn't lie.

Maybe it seems convenient that this letter shows up all of a sudden, to give Bush's poll numbers a shot in the arm and distract people from all negative things.

But, its not like they would lie, just to advance their agenda.

:sarcasm:

3. It's amazing how often Al-Zawahri consults with Jr. and coincides his
speeches and chilling letters with one of His Fraudulency's 'terra, terra, terra' speeches. Coincidinky, I think not.

6. What a coincidence
Right after Bush's speech on terrorism, right after his stepped-up rhetoric about staying the course, right after him making believe how we're making headway in the "war" on terrorism, right after these new reports how we've thwarted 10 secret terrorist attacks in the last 4 years with 3 of them being planned in the US.

These fear mongers can find any letters they want to suit their agenda, yet they could never trace all those anthrax letters to the source.

They should do a DNA test on the letter to see if Rove's breath is on it.

14. Ummm...didn't we create an Islamic state there in the hopes of
extending our brand of extremism to neighboring countries?

Oh, I forgot, they're evil and the voices in George's coked-out brain told him God was on the line and he needed to get his war on. :eyes:
