AARP
I work for a company that represents AARP members. I talk to thousands of aarp members a month who are pissed at the administration, tired of the goverment. Tired of a 2% increase in social security and then an increase in medicare/medicaid premium. Veterans who can't stand the president- its refreshing.

What are some DU opinions about AARP?

They acknowledge domestic partnerships, they went against the grain with the social security 'reform' bush pushed for...they seem to becoming more liberal than they prev were. Anyway I can't find any new info on their 'organization' so I'm interested.

1. They have great car insurance
which is why I joined. I sometimes read their articles, and I like the fact that they do have some clout with lawmakers.

2. I like this group the best....Alliance for Retired Americans.
I am not sure about AARP, they sold seniors out on the Medicare plan. I think they would do it again.

16. They sure did not oppose him when
the drug and insurance companies wanted to snuggle up to the Medicare trough. They supported the Bush plan all the way and it will cost taxpayers billions.

7. Well I will be honest here
when they sent me a membership card when I turned 50 I got pretty damned mad at them!

I can't even begin to think of retiring until I'm 62! And at 50 I didn't think of myself as a senior citizen.

I think they have bummed out an entire generation!

8. AARP
sigh. Now there is a "I got mine and..." group of individuals.

They only started speaking out against this admin when it hurt them personally, and it's a shame, because you'd think our elders would have more consideration of long-term consequences, and you'd think they'd care about the rest of us just a little bit more. But, no. It's just like Sun City in Arizona. They're a very narrow-minded selfish group, imho.

They're as bad as all the rest of them; they only cared about the money. They didn't care about the troops dying.

24. exactly, they have always used their political clout
to help their members at the expense of younger working people. I think it is funny though, that they oppose Bush's SS 'reform'. He deliberately protected them, said benefits would not change for people over 55. Current AARP members would not be screwed but potential future ones would be. But they opposed it as if the current members would be hurt. Helpful, but disingenuous.
Plus, they are the only age group where Bush had a clear majority.

10. AARP is an insurance company
They pretend to represent the retired people of America, but they are just another insurance company.

Oh, and by the way, the supported the billion dollar welfare program for drug companies that Bush called a Medicare drug benefit.

12. no
I work for the insurance company- it is not aarp.
AAPR collects membership $ and people get benefits for their membership. Not only that but they also seem to listening to what the elderly want.

Can someone explain the support of the welfare program for drug companies I don't know about this.

14. Bush's medicare
Gave the drug companies the right to charge any price they wanted to and prohibited the government from negotiating for lower prices.

17. I quit sending them "Grassroots" contributions when...
they won the support for this awful prescription drug coverage.

I got really pissed when they sent me a letter that said that Mother's AARP Medigap insurance negated her Medicare drug coverage.

They will make sure that anything the government does will not hurt their insurance.

Novelli is a crook from the Reagan administration.

And I puked when they put Coni Rice then Katie Couric on the covers of their last two magazines.

21. I told AARP to shove it when I turned 40 and they refused to let me vote
Their attorney wrote me a letter telling me it was not descrmination to not allow me a voting membership even though I was 40. He said I would not vote for the betterment of senior citizens since I was paying the taxes and that is why nobody under 50 can vote.

AAR officals make mega bucks and they do this by selling products to seniors that they do not need on their web site. I am now 52 years old and will never join them. They have helped bankrupt SS Security by overcommitting money that comes out of too many people's pockets. I just looked at my SS wage statement and since I started working I have sent them over 95,000 and my employer's have matched that.

I am CONVINCED AARP is a racket.
