Why is she leaving the show?

15. Here's all the info from the Franken Show staff:

It is with great regret that we write to let you know that Katherine Lanpher will be leaving "The Al Franken Show." Katherine has received a book deal from a new imprint at Time Warner to write a memoir of her move to New York.

While we will miss Katherine every time Al fumbles an interview, mangles an introduction, or has to go to the bathroom in the middle of a segment, in other words, all the time, we are thrilled that she has this opportunity to use the talent that has sustained us at "The Al Franken Show" in a new and rewarding way.

Her deadline in mid-January is unusually aggressive and necessitates an almost immediate departure so that she can begin procrastinating in earnest. Katherine has been very generous in agreeing to work for another two weeks while we prepare as best we can for our Post-Katherine Era.

Her last broadcast as co-host will be on Friday, Oct. 7th. Her first broadcast as best-selling author should take place sometime next spring.

22. "Her first broadcast as best-selling author"
That sounds like she'll be returning.

During the program today, Al said something about how they would be there until January. I took that to mean that this is when he'll be moving the show from the NYC studio to Minnesota. So, maybe after her book tour, she'll rejoin the show. I suppose that she would be an asset to Franken's eventual run for Senator since she's also a MN native.

Apparently there was a DUI and a "hit and run" incident that forced her to leave radio there.

It's hard to find an article that's not a wingnut blog, but here's a search of the Star Tribune archives from 2003 with the terms Katherine Lanpher:"

On edit: Okay, the link didn't work. You can do the search yourself here:

That's why she was there originally...to teach Radio to Al Franken. She's not a performer or comedian, she's a radio journalist and a damned fine one at that.

Yes, I'm going to miss her too.

26. Joe Conason was a real gentleman in the third hour
and gave her a great sendoff too. She is a classy person, the epitome of Minnesota nice (which I never quite got the hang of as a former Minnesotan myself). I for one will miss her greatly on the show. I look forward to reading her book (assuming she can stop procrastinating long enough to write it).

except for one on Tuesday as a "goodbye" from Old Al.

It's not a matter of Katherine being happier somewhere else, but this book deal is very important, and she doesn't have lots of time — her deadline is first of the year.
