The operation in Iraq yesterday and the day before was aimed at disrupting the threat and resulted in two people being taken into custody and a third being sought,
the newspaper said, citing law enforcement officials it didn't identify. Military officials in Baghdad declined to comment.
The information came to light last weekend from an intelligence source who told federal authorities that the three men in Iraq had planned to meet with others in New York, according to the newspaper. The attackers intended to use strollers, briefcases and packages to hide bombs they planned to set off on the subways, the New York Times said.
One official told the daily that the group numbered about a dozen people, while another official said the total was closer to 20 members, the newspaper said. The information suggested an attack could happen as early as today, according to one official, with another saying it was more likely to occur in the middle of the month, the New York Times said.
