1. Why are we even surprised at bills like this anymore?
As long as large corporations are entitled to the same rights as individuals, but have far more money than individuals, they will continue to be the primary benefactor of government largesse.

95. "As long as corporations are entitled to the same rights as individuals"
Oh, IF ONLY! Corporations have many more rights than individuals, and not just because they have more money. How many of your individual "operating costs" can you write off on your tax returns? Just barely enough to keep down the revolt. And when was the last time a corporation suffered the death penalty? Corporations which kill people by dumping toxic waste, failing to disclose the harmful effects of their products, etc. deserve exactly that. Big tobacco companies were caught red-handed -- their executives should all go to jail, the physical plant be sold off to pay medical bills, and the trademark names banned from use. And companies like Halliburton should simply be nationalized.

Yes, I AM ticked about this...

105. Go to temporary internet files and pull it into a file in your offline ...
downloads. I have a real slow go with videos, so that is what I do. I let them load up go get them from Temp files and drag and drop into a file I have made in My Documents. They stream perfectly then and you have them offline as well, like when my kids come to visit and they need to see what has been happening. I use my video files all the time and don't have to wait for anything to load up. Don't laugh it is just my way...I have minimum computer knowlege, so doing the best I can.

That's a pretty inventive solution!

I've just started reading this thread so don't know if someone already popped up with this method, but an easy, very fast way to download videos, audio clips, or PDFs, etc., is to right-click the link, choose "Save target as," then browse to the desired location on your computer, creating a new file if necessary, then click "okay" or "save" or whatever it sez . . . right this minnit, I forget.

http://www.crooksandliars.com/2005/10/07.html#a5275

I can't play Quicktime either, it seems my system has rejected that format (odd), so what I'll do is right click the video link, "save target as" and then once it's downloaded, right click "rename" and change the "mov" to "mpg", double click that and it should start.

20. Well, the cries are here now.
My personal belief is that some outrageously filthy political tactics, the Anthrax attacks, and a couple of light-plane crashes helped to silence the opposition.

But paranoia aside, our leaders have only as strong a voice as the American people give them. As more of us have spoken up, so have they.

And as we already know, the Media has for the most part been on the side of the "unholy" for some time now. I wonder if they'll spin this as a "crybaby" moment, the lousy F'ers.

102. My Congressman (SessionsTX) is a total whore
Part of the letter I just wrote:

You call yourselves the party of values, and perhaps you are, if by values you mean belief in:

• Corporate control of government
• Torture
• Mass incarceration of Americans whose only crime is addiction
• Life sentences for petty three-strikes criminals
• Use of radioactive weapons
• Pollution for fun and profit
• Waging war against a noun
• Establishing religion in public life
• Winning hearts and minds through a show of force
• Mass killing of innocent people
• Replacing family farms with government-subsidized factory farms that trade in the misery of animals
• Lying to poor people about family planning alternatives
• Withholding the new cervical cancer vaccine from girls to punish them in case they have premarital sex
• Shouting down people who don’t agree with you
• Subsidies for pharmaceutical companies at the expense of affordable health care for citizens
• Subsidies for rich oil companies
• No-bid contracts for buddies and lobbyists
• Withholding the morning-after pill from rape victims
• Trashing an irreplaceable wilderness for short-term profit
• Lack of planning for alternative energy sources
• Lying to the public
• Forced taxpayer support of religious institutions
• Light sentences for executives who bilk millions from investors
• Wealth as a sign of favor from God
• Governmental control of women’s bodies
• Taxing the living over taxing the deceased
• Misnaming legislation to trick voters about its purpose
• Passing legislation without reading it
• Government intrusion into family affairs
• Suppression of dissent
• The dismantling of the Bill of Rights
• The Ten Commandments as the law of the land
• Corporate evasion of taxes through loopholes and off shore locations
• Free passes for war criminals
• Piggish spending on pet projects
• Government secrecy
• Extraordinary rendition
• One true religion (the other billions of people are wrong)
• Concentration of the public airwaves in the hands of the few, preferably big donors
• Indefinite incarceration without charge or access to counsel
• Robbing from future generations to pay for present-day whims and greed
• Deadening students with test-based education
• The politics of dirty tricks and personal attack
• Voting machines with no paper trail and secret source code
• Vote suppression in poor areas
• Propaganda disguised as news

Let me know if I left anything out.

21. Is there a Linux friendly version of this?
Not everybody has the top secret decoder ring necessary to decode the proprietary I-work-only-on-technology-X media.

I can generally view and listen to standard Real, non-cutting edge Windows Media, non-cutting edge Apple Quicktime and, of course, MPEG (which is portable everywhere). This appears to be cutting edge Quicktime. I do not run Apple or Microsoft.

I'll look at all the usual places and see if I can find an alternate version for us Linux people.

House Passes Refinery Bill After Seesaw Battle October 7, 2005
by Congressional Quarterly

fter a seesaw vote that GOP leaders held open long past the allotted time, the House this afternoon passed legislation to ease environmental reviews and take other steps to spur construction of new or expanded refineries. The final tally was 212-210. GOP leaders held the vote open until they succeeded in changing the votes of two of the 15 GOP holdouts who had voted against the measure. The count until then was stuck at 210-212, with six members of each party not voting. Democrats chanted "Shame! Shame! Shame!" after the gavel fell. Joe L. Barton, R-Texas, chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee, last night stripped a contentious change to the Clean Air Act from his refinery bill at the request of House leadership and the White House. But even that was not enough to win clear sailing for the controversial measure.

Edited on Fri Oct-07-05 06:50 PM by Tatiana
The Democrats showed up full-force today and did our country proud.

Let's give credit where credit is due and encourage the awesome stand these Democrats took. Remember, NOT ONE DEMOCRAT voted for this bill.

NOT ONE.

That is a phenomenal example of unity.

is my personal irritation after having 'beaten' the very good progressive incumbent Ciro Rodriguez with votes found in the basement of his friend's bank.

I've been watching Cuellar since his installation and haven't been surprised yet. I miss Ciro.

48. That, my friends, is historical footage
A throwback to the decorum of the House of Commons.

".... Shame .... Shame .... Shame ...."

Leader (rightly, Speaker) Pelosi shouting down the presiding officer.

Near revolt on the floor on the United States House of Representatives.

And as we've seen it, will it be reported upon by the Three Monkey Media?

I suspect not.

101. Done! Thanks for the Pelosi email!
Subject line: Congrats on "Shame, shame, shame"! MORE of same!

Dear Leader Pelosi: Congratulations on the unanimous Democratic stand-up against Bushite thuggery in the House on the “Leave No Oilman Behind” bill”! I am so proud of you! I’ve been a Dem voter and supporter for 40 years, and I sometimes don’t agree with you, and sometimes feel that I have no party at all advocating for my interests and for the interests of the majority of Americans. Yesterday I felt REPRESENTED at last! Keep it up! Thank you!

Next: Bushite corporations controlling the tabulation of our votes with “trade secret,” proprietary programming code, and the egregious non-transparency of electronic voting systems. Restoring transparent elections is a must-do. Can’t be done in Congress. You and we, the public, must address this at the state/local level, purge the corruption there (including in our own party), and restore our right to vote. Then we will have something, no? A great progressive American majority (I KNOW that it’s there—take a look at the issue polls over the last 2 years!), a great progressive American Congress and President, in a great progressive country!

Yours sincerely,
XXXX

Compromise is insufficent in dealing with these manipulators of the public trust.

Until we see the fistfights of centuries past on the floor of the House, Republicans will continue to flout the rules and traditions of our obsolescing democracy.

Please, watch this video if you haven't yet. Particularly if you're interested in seeing the impotence of our well-intentioned Democratic leadership in the midst of an authoritarian coup.

AP NEWS > http://159.54.227.3/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20051008/NEWS/510080305

"Rep. Joe Barton, R-Texas, who had predicted a close vote, said he was not aware of "any deals" being made to get the last votes. No Democrats voted for the legislation, although three initially favored it, only to change their minds after talking to Pelosi and Rep. Steny Hoyer of Maryland, the second-ranking Democrat."

I'm not sure who the last 2 were, but here's what I've found in a NY Times article:

***

In the end, Mr. Gerlach and Mr. Young, along with Representative Wayne T. Gilchrist, Republican of Maryland were among the switchers, and Mr. Bartlett voted for the measure, sending it to the Senate, where its future is dim, because Republicans there say it would face a filibuster.

WORSE than a banana republic. FASCISM, pure and simple. The abuses of power by the Republic party should be enough to convince every citizen in this country that they should NEVER be trusted with that power again.
There is nothing these power-mad fascists will not stoop to in order to get their way. DeLay should be..... I can't say what he should be, I'd get a visit from the Secret Service. That piece of shit must be removed from the House of Representatives, hopefully in manacles and never be allowed to soil the House Chamber again by his presence. He is the most vile, disgusting, vengeful, evil, unjust life form on this planet.

116. Shame,Shame,Shame
Unfortunately, I had to get in to my volunteer job and missed the live video of the Demos yelling SHAME SHAME SHAME..Did see it through one of the links this morning. I am not an expert on the rules of the House, or anything else for that matter, but I believe that they can always manipulate and change the rules EXCEPT...and only possibly (not for sure )in cases where the is no quorum. So, if we know ahead of time, how's about just going on strike. Don't show up....would it be a quorum anyway (because all the lock-step Republican votes would be there)??? It was a disgraceful and very undemocratic performance, but who's surprised. Suggested reading -- October issue of Harper's magazine, page 7, Lewis Lapham, and his recounting of an essay by Umberto Eco...setting out the most notable axioms of fascism and communism...which sound alarming like our boys in the cabal of this administration:
The truth is revealed once and only once.
Parliamentary democracy is by definition rotten because it doesn't represent the voice of the people, which is that of the sublime leader.
Doctrine outpoints reason, and science is always suspect.
Critical thought is the province of degenerate intellectuals, who betray the culture and subvert traditional values.
The national identity is provided by the nation's enemies
Argument is tantamount to treason.
Perpetually at war, the state must govern with the instrument of fear.
Citizens do not act; they plan the supporting role of 'the people' in the grand opera that is the state.
(Eco's essay was called "Ur-Fascism", and was published in 1995 in the New York Review of Books.)

Special thanks to Marie26 for the detective work. I found nothing else anywhere that addressed the mechanics of how the Republican leadership went about fixing the vote.
