XML (RSS) - anyone using this software for news sites?
I've recently been seeing several news sites with the XML(RSS), and have read only a little bit about it, but I'm still not sure if it is something I want to download and use. If you've been using it, I'd like some feed-back on your experience. (I gather this software allows a news site's headlines to come up on a separate screen, and will auto-refresh if any headlines have been added or changed??)

1. I use it for DU LBN :-)

It's pretty good. DU's RSS has some weird effects with some software like not updating when it should. However, RSS is a very good thing if you like to keep current on news.

2. Neither XML nor RSS are software

They(RSS itself is formatted in XML) are just formats to exchange data. When and how the data refreshes is entirely up to the software you use to actually interpret it.

3. I've been using it for almost a year now, it's great if you get...
...the right RSS "reader" I use RssReader ver. 1.0.88.0, which is a FreeWare Program, or you can get RSS feeds with the FireFox companion E-mail program ThunderBird, but it's not as good as a stand alone reader.

Here's a link to RssReader: <http://www.rssreader.com/>

Let me know if you have any other question about it.

5. There are also Firefox extensions that do RSS feeds
Sage and Habari Xenu seem to be the best of those. They let you open an RSS reader in a new tab, and any link you click on comes up in the regular browser.

Newsreaders are really useful if you want to scan through a lot of headlines to see what's up or what you might be interested in. For that purpose, they're essential. But a lot of people can live very happily without them.

It isn't just news sites that offer RSS feeds, though. Many blogs do. You can also get science news or economic news or whatever that way. It can be very handy.

6. Yup, I use Sage as my RSS plugin for firefox
Works great for blogs. You don't have to go visit them just to find out that they don't have new content, they tell you when they do when you hit the update button. Nice!
