Framing alert: Neocons don't exist? That's the latest line I've heard.
Edited on Sat Oct-08-05 07:07 PM by LuckyTheDog
It seems as though the neocons are trying to distance themselves from the label they once wore proudly. Has anyone else noticed?

They are trying to spin the idea that the "neoconservative" label is just an epithet used by the Dems to denigrate people they don't like -- or worse, an antisemitic slur (because some leading neocons happen to be Jewish). It reminds me of the old days when the Mafia used to insist that it didn't exist and that the whole idea was invented by those who hate Italians.

I don't know if this is evidence of progress for our side or just another slippery, reptilian "framing" move by the far right. But we need to counter them on this, I think.

4. they've been doing this since the beginning: here's the process.
1. there are no neocons, you're conspiracy theorist

Then, when you show them there are:

2. There may be neocons, but they don't have any in the administration

Then, when you show them there are

3. There may be neocons in the administration, but they don't have any influence

Then, when you show them how the PNAC manifesto of "American Global Leadership" directly coincides with the current administration's manifesto

4. your rejecting of neocons is because they're Jewish. You're antisemitic.

Then, when you say that there are nonjewish neocons

5. there are no neocons, you're conspiracy theorist

lather, rinse, repeat.

I went through this cycle endlessly on another political board that was mixed between conservative and liberal...as long ago as 3 years ago this cycle was in place.

6. Frustrating, isn't it?
The problem now seems to be that this idea has been picked up in the MSM. They now seem reluctant to use the term.

7. Not according to my libertarian brother
In fact, he is the one I first heard the term from "Neocon" as opposed to "Paleo-con" I thought he was kidding (or delusional) back then. He hates "neocons". He's pretty conservative, and very anti-war. I should do my own homework I know, but does anybody know where the term originated?
I sure the neoconservatives would like to be associated with old time conservative values, but they've shown there true colors, to progressives at least. I'm pretty sure those with libertarian inclinations are aware as well.
Hopefully it's a pandora's box labeling wise. The media seems to have picked it up, but I could see it going away if there was a concentrated effort by neoconservatives. It could be just my impression, but it seems like it's beginning to have a very negative connotation, and the last thing they would want is a stigmatized word, like, say "Liberal" or "Feminist"

9. In a nutshell....

Neocons represent the school of thought that the world would have been better off after the Cold War if America had gone ahead and militarilly conquered everyone. The only reason those who are against neocons might be considered anti-Semitic is where neoconservatism might jibe with radical Zionism.
