"She needs a crash course in constitutional law."
ouch!!!!!

WASHINGTON, Oct. 8 - After a blistering week, the White House is scrambling to control a conservative uprising over the nomination of Harriet E. Miers to the Supreme Court, with President Bush pitching his choice directly to the public on Saturday as his Republican allies plotted strategy to shore up support.

"Harriet Miers will be the type of judge I said I would nominate: a good conservative judge," Mr. Bush said in his weekly radio address. He added, "When she goes before the Senate, I am confident that all Americans will see what I see every day: Harriet Miers is a woman of intelligence, strength and conviction."

It was the third time since he picked Ms. Miers on Monday that the president has come to her defense. His remarks came as Senator Arlen Specter, the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, who presides over confirmation hearings, offered a blunt assessment that was yet another sign that the nominee faced an uphill battle on Capitol Hill. Though Mr. Specter called Ms. Miers "intellectually able," he said she had a "fair-sized job to do" to become fluent in the language of constitutional law, which will be essential for senators who want to examine her judicial philosophy in deciding whether to confirm her.

"She needs more than murder boards," Mr. Specter, Republican of Pennsylvania, said in an interview, referring to the mock question-and-answer sessions most nominees use to prepare for their confirmation hearings. "She needs a crash course in constitutional law."

2. Great ..
instead of a scholar, like Lawrence Tribe, we are going to have the Church Lady (who doesn't remember the stuff she learned in ConLaw). True, if you're a Rethuglican hack, you are going to come up with the result the Thugs want you to, but you (she) could at least learn the buzzwords!

15. I think that's been the plan all along.......
to have a willing dupe on the Court that they can program before, during or after every case brought before it.
I'm not saying Miers is unintelligent because she certainly is. However I think this was the intention of the bush administration from the start. She'd be a living legacy of bush's failed administration for decades to come.
The buzz on this morning's talk shows was "how this was going to affect bush's legacy". :eyes: Sorry guys, there's no saving bush's legacy, it's doomed to be considered one of if not THE worst administration, ever. I found it shocking that all that's being considered in bush's "precious legacy". :puke:

30. But what will she do when his alcoholic dementia sets in?
Let's hope she'll use her time to bone up on the law, seeing as the Supremes do not have an especially arduous schedule. Assuming, of course, that she even gets out of committee....

Wow! Thanx for that post!

Basically, her experience in Constitutional Law was mainly to help elect George W. Bush. That's definitely cronyism right there.

27. Oh, those courses are already offered at the State Department...
If she had only bothered to look, she would have discovered the Diplomat Corps has extensive programs designed to avoid just such faux pas. If she had also bothered to listen, she would also have discovered she was surrounded by professional people who have advanced through the ranks of the Diplomat Corps that would have offered to advised her better. Listening appears to be a problem with Karen Hughes, perhaps she should visit an otolaryngologist and get the wax cleaned out of her ears.

I'm just saying...

10. Bush has a good trend going.
For some reason, Bush likes to appoint people who are not qualified for positions they don't deserve. Bolton, Miers, and Brownie to name a few. Two out of those three have already fucked up on the job, is Bush trying to maintain his perfect record? Now I understand why the dude ran all of his companies into the ground, he doesn't have an ounce of management skills.

17. Idiot (Specter)
Sphincter needs to be reminded that a "brain dump" normally follows a "crash course." There is little or no retention of the information no matter how "brilliant" (not) the applicant, nominee, aspirant is.

My suggestion for Dowager/Old Maid Miers is to give up her delusions of grandeur and exit ungracefully in a full face plant on the Rose Garden lawn.

31. I sometimes wonder if this isn't a Monkey Feint
He puts her up to satisfy the WOMAN FOR A WOMAN crowd, and then she bows out, and he proposes another crony with a slightly longer paper trail, ALBERTO GONZALEZ, who makes it through the gauntlet because they will not want an even worse candidate on the third try, and then he slides "Harry" into the newly vacant AG slot.

He can tell Pickles, hey honey, AH TRIED!!!

And he can tell the far right, hey, she was one of Y'ALL, and YOU gave me shit about it!

And so long as she doesn't screw up totally as AG, he can tell the "intellectual conservatives" that she WOULDA made a good SCJ, but you guys were MEAN to me!

21. bush* got himself into a QUAG-MIER with this one
The reich-wingers are up in arms because Miers isn't as radically rabid as they are. Even some repug-senators are concerned over the lack of information - although I don't know why they seemed surprised since the bushies have never willingly divulged any information

meanwhile - most dems seem to be taking a wait and see attitude, prefering to watch the repugs fight amongst themselves, and occassionlly throwing in supporting comments about Miers which starts up the repugs fighting all over again

I've heard alot of theories about why bush* picked Miers... but it seems to me that the most obvious is the most likely -- bush* screwed up....again

I've hated Specter for almost 40 years because of his role in the "single-bullet" theory fraud the Warren Commission tried to foist on the country...and now, as a sick old man, I find that he's one of the very few people who can even momentarily help in the headlong flight of the US towards fascism...a "moderate" Republican heading the Judiciary Committee. God save us all...:-(...
