Is there any mainstream media coverage of this House energy bill farce?
Edited on Sat Oct-08-05 08:34 PM by Mayberry Machiavelli
Did they have this vote going into the weekend just to skirt media scrutiny or was that a coincidence?

Is it GOING to be covered? Should we mediablast, write newspaper ombudsmen if we want it to be covered?

Is Olberman, TDS, on the case too?

1. I have an idea. Let's have a half million people march on DC
and demand coverage of the bill. They're bound to cover it then.

(Pardon my sarcasm.)

2. Does U-Boat sub commander Blitzer count?
He had it on his show.

Unfortunately, this happening on a friday meant it was too late for the Daily Show, hopefully something on monday. If you notice, one of their biggest sources of footage is C-Span.

Remember when they covered the Sensenbrenner tantrum, Jon summed it up "Our Government is being run by children!"

3. I completely missed something
Is there a new energy bill? What are the major provisions? I thought we already passed one?

4. G.A.S. Act
Big brouhaha on the House floor. There's a link on www.crooksandliars.com to the video. Ended with House Dems yelling "shame shame shame".

Here's the provisions of the new bill to "build more refineries" because of Katrina. That's how you'll see it covered in the newspapers.

Clean Air Act Implications

Sec. 106 - Significantly weakens the Clean Air Act's New Source Review program, allowing more than 20,000 industrial facilities to expand or upgrade in ways that increase pollution without installing modern pollution controls.
Sec. 109 - Delays existing smog cleanup deadlines in cities with some of the most persistent smog problems, prolonging unsafe levels of smog for many years.
Sec. 108 - Undermines the implementation of EPA's upcoming rules to clean up the nation's trucks, buses, farm equipment and other diesel engines.
Sec. 107 - Allows indefinite waiver of controls on fuel sulfur content and toxics, such as benzene, while preempting states from adopting or retaining more protective requirements during the waiver period.
Sec. 108 - Freezes the development of further clean fuels and specifically provides that no additional sulfur or toxics control requirements can be approved without an explicit "fuel supply availability" determination by EPA.

Taxpayers and Governmental Oversight Implications

Sec. 402 - Weakens the enforcement provisions of the Federal Trade Commission Act by limiting penalties for price gouging to $11,000 per day.
Sec. 104 - Provides an open-ended taxpayer subsidy to cover all the costs an oil company may incur due to a delay in the initial operation of a new or upgraded oil refinery, including delays due to compliance with state or federal laws or regulations.

Public Lands Implications

Sec. 101 - Requires the President to designate sites on Federal lands, including closed military bases, that are appropriate for the siting of refineries.
Sec. 110 - Undoes a 28-year-old law that limits tanker traffic in the sensitive waters of Puget Sound removing all practical limits on the giant tankers, 600 of which already ply the Sound each year.

10. Let me get this straight....
Under Sec. 402, the GOP is preventing gas price gouging by limiting the penalty for it;

and

Under Sec. 104, the taxpayer is going to be footing the bill if State or Federal rules and other nonsense keeps them Oil Companies from doing refinin' the just way they want.

So the upshot of those two changes is that, as a gasoline/heating oil consumer, the Oil Companies can now screw me at the pump/furnace with less cost and I'll be paying them to do it?

Is that correct? Just checking, ya know.

11. It would seem so
The only thing that got removed, that I know of, is the upgrade and maintenance provision. That's been environmental regulation since forever and this bill was going to remove it too. The environment has literally been raped this week, between this bill and the Endangered Species Act. It's no wonder people aren't complaining though, they think a bill to build more refineries passed and that's it.

http://thinkprogress.org/2005/10/07/house-block-vote

"Gasoline for America's Security Act of 2005", to grease oil industry palms. There was a vote. It failed. Repub Mafia then held the vote open for 45 extra minutes to twist arms on their side until they "won" at which time they THEN gaveled the proceedings as over. Apparently they had preemptively passed some bill that exempted this specific bill from the usual parliamentary rules governing votes, in anticipation of this move. This makes me think the vote was scheduled for Friday just to dodge media scrutiny as well. Delay was out there with the rest of the Shrubpranos twisting arms.

Because there is VIDEO of this we need to get it covered, so all America can SEE with their own eyes the corruption that is Repub government, seeing as how we're a TV nation and all.

6. It was just on the local news here in Seattle.
I don't know if it was on yesterday, as I did not watch, but they showed the clip of Pelosi trying to talk and the Chair trying to shout her down. They also showed the Chair reading the final vote tally at warp speed. Our local news guy made some comment about the Chair and how fast he was talking.

12. Do you really believe that??
Do you realize NOBODY reads the NYTimes?? In the scheme of things in the US, NOBODY reads it, that's just reality. If it isn't on every network and CNN, it isn't in the news.
