Miers Mess
Miers pick may be splitting solid GOP base
http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/printstory.mpl/politics/3388326

----snippet: "When you add all of these things on top of each other, the party is drunk with power, the ethics problems are so thick you can cut them with a knife," said Viguerie, who chaired the Harris County Young Republicans in the 1950s. "I think Republicans are heading for some tough times in the 2006 and 2008 elections."

In contrast to the constantly feuding Democratic Party, Republicans in modern times mostly have obeyed what is known as President Reagan's 11th Commandment: "Thou shalt not speak ill of a fellow Republican."

---snippet: Gloria Gonzales Roemer, a Republican political commentator who works for Harris County Judge Robert Eckels, blamed the news media for hyping intraparty conflict and "searching for anything to grab a hold of."

"There will always be a little bit of discontent, and you voice your discontent when you know the family is secure and there is a strong foundation," Roemer said.

--------------

among the things crawling around in the mess is the "discontent" by GOPer Dissenters.... don't they support the pResident? Aren't they being unpatriotic? Don't they realize that by expressing their dissent that they are empowing the terrorists? :sarcasm:

With the cracks appearing and widening amongst GOPers - the repugs on the judicial committee can't afford to throw softball questions.

Regarding withdrawing of her nomination -- this is going to depend on how loud the "dissenters" get. Although bush* is standing behind her as the "best he could find" -- we all know that this isn't worth anything. You could hardly expect him to say otherwise, and should her nomination be withdrawn it will be framed as "personal reasons"

Assuming she makes it out of committee and to the Senate floor -- will the repugs push for a quick-like-a-bunny up/down vote or will they allow for a reasonable length of time for a debate? Will repugs attempt to weasel out of the extraordinary circumstances clause and try to filibuster themselves? Will they nuke themselves?

2. Hope you saw Billmon...
I love this part...

"...this is kind of like the scene in The Unsinkable Molly Brown where Debbie Reynolds is trying to impress the swells of Denver society, only to have her hillbilly Pa and his cronies come stumbling in drunk and ruin her act.
One can easily imagine George Will tsk tsking as he reads his morning paper: "What do you expect from those people?" (Yeah, they come in white, too.)"

http://billmon.org/archives/002240.html

And what I want to see from the hearings is Crazy Tom Coburn badgering Harriet until she breaks down and cries on national TV....

3. lol -- thanks
gave me a chuckle

The saddest part of this is the "best I could find" statement. It's weak and like throwing up your arms and saying 'oh well'...

4. In the cartoon thread, there's one that has Chimpy saying
"She's the best I could find without getting up from my chair."

5. :He's the most brilliant man I ever met."
If she really said that then her IQ must be way below average.

6. I repeat myself.
This nomination is starting to look deader than Elvis. And we haven't even started the confirmation hearings yet. You can bet that if Miers gives blank platitudes as Roberts then she's done.

If Senators get no information through hearings, wasting time and effort, can one expect them to be no less than mad?

7. What's so funny about all this is that I do think that * is handing the RR
Edited on Sun Oct-09-05 06:24 AM by Skidmore
exactly the kind of candidate they wanted. It is just amazing that there is such a meltdown by them when they are being offered what they wanted all along. The only thing I can think of to prompt this reaction is that Falwell, Robertson, and Graham wanted to be seen by their followers in actually installing a member of the Court. *, on the other hand, was going to put in someone of his own choosing--primarily to make sure his political hiney was covered--if he was going to be the face for this appointment. It was a sucker punch to the RR and the * junta--delivered with finesse by our own Mr. Reid.

8. I do not get the Rights fuss
She is just what they want. Right church, worked for the abortion law to go away, is a wart on Bush's back and has gone to the end to keeping Bush out of trouble plus lived in the bubble for the last years.Could it be because she is an un-married women? To many on the court seem to be of another world any how. I worry my own 2 Sen, have had no children to worry about so may not think like every day people do. But my daughter tells me Collins is very much in-line with children. My big kick on these people running things is they do not seem to ever have to face what we all have to face.

9. This is a time when Democrats should adopt the Reagan rule:
Edited on Sun Oct-09-05 07:21 AM by Vinca
"Thou shalt not speak ill of a fellow Democrat." Look how well it's worked for the pukes. It would still be working if, deep down, they weren't a bunch of greedy crooks.

Edit for spelling . . . not enough coffee yet.
