"the tipster passed PARTS of a lie-detector test"
Edited on Sun Oct-09-05 07:17 AM by unblock
not that i put enormous stock in so-called lie-detector tests, but saying that a test showed he only lied sometimes is hardly a ringing endorsement of his credibility!

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20051009/ap_on_re_us/nyc_subway

An overseas tipster told U.S. intelligence last month that three men were plotting a coordinated bomb attack on the country's subways, law enforcement officials said. The tipster passed parts of a lie-detector test, and U.S. forces in Iraq arrested three suspected plotters earlier in the week.

3. this whole story is odd
US Military arrest so called plotters based on a tipster and lie detector, but HLS doesn't put much faith in the reports. so why were they arrested?

4. note this implies that a 'proven' liar wields enormous disruptive power

so basically ANYONE, even people the banana republicans admit lies and isn't credible, can cause a day or so of panic; shift the duties of literally thousands of armed guards; disrupt new yorkers' commuting and travel plans; probably cause plenty of people to cancel their night out, thereby disrupting the economy; etc.

these fearmongers just piss me off to no end....

5. I took a lie detector test for a job once
I lied my ass off and passed with flying colors. All you have to do is breathe deep.

7. key for me is that, at best, it only detects a troubled conscience.
pathological liars don't think anything of lying, and therefore experience no physical symptoms when they lie. therefore those sorts of tests can't detect the worst offenders. at best they only detect people who get nervous when they lie.

moreover, they also snare people who get nervous when hooked up with wires to machines that might determine they employment status or criminal liability.

8. At the time
I just didn't care whether or not I got that particular job, so I took the test just to see what would happen.

9. i'm a very low-stress, mellow person
so i imagine that i might be able to lie through a 'lie-detector' test because whatever physiological changes i have might be too small to register.

but the one time i took the test, it was to get my g-2 clearance, so i figured it was not the time to play games....
