********The Mardi Gras Mask Auction!********
Edited on Sat Oct-15-05 10:46 AM by Skinner
IMPORTANT UPDATE FROM THE DU ADMINISTRATORS

The Mardi Gras mask auction ends tonight at 11:59:59 PM Eastern Time (8:59:59 PM Pacific) -- and for the purposes of this auction, the DU message board time-stamp is the official clock. Just in case the DU admins do not lock the thread at *exactly* midnight, we need to make it clear which bids are considered valid and which will not.

In the case of a last-minute bidding frenzy:

All bids with a DU time-stamp of 11:59:59 PM Eastern Time, October 15, 2005 or EARLIER will be considered valid for the purposes of this auction. If a bid has a time-stamp of 12:00:00 midnight or later, it is considered TOO LATE and will be considered invalid.

The bidding will close at exactly 11:59:59 PM Eastern Time, October 15, 2005 even if access to the website is restricted for some reason at that time. If the website crashes, or if an individual member has computer trouble and cannot access the site, or if an unexpected problem blocks access to some people but not others, the bidding will still close at exactly 11:59:59 PM Eastern Time, October 15.

Thank you to everyone who has participated in this auction.

The Mardi Gras Mask and Fetish Auction

"Mardi Gras Indians are secretive because only certain people participated in masking -- people with questionable character." http://www.mardigrasneworleans.com/mardigrasindians/

In the spirit of the Mardi Gras Indians, DU artists of "questionable character" proudly present an underground gallery of handmade mardi gras masks and poppets to be auctioned on October 15 to benefit Gulf Coast DUers whose lives were devastated by Katrina.

The masks we auction on DU express our individual artistry, our shared politics, and our common humanity. Out of the ashes of destruction, we will invoke the spirit of Mardi Gras.

Prepare to be
razzledazzled!

You are encouraged to bid on any of the items as many times as you wish from now until October 15 at 11:59:59 PM EST! Bid generously and often.

Bidders should hit “reply” under a mask's thread and type the word BID and the bid amount in the header. Donations will also be accepted. Type PLEDGE and an amount if you pledge to make a donation to the relief fund rather than bidding on a mask. Grovelbot will
close the bidding at 11:59:59 PM Eastern time on October 15. High bidders and those making donations should contact Skinner to arrange payment. Afterwards, each artist will PM bidders to make shipping arrangements.

Skinner will disburse monies collected to DU members devastated by Hurricane Katrina. At this time, two DUers have been identified as having the most need. Merh from Mississippi and Swamp Rat from New Orleans.

Let's open our hearts to these two. Merh lost her home, her car and her job. Swamp Rat has had to evacuate to another city and may have to put his educational plans on hold. They need our help. This is a way to make sure all of the money you give gets to the ones who need it. Skinner has generously offered to host the auction and collect the funds for us. Now it's up to us.

This mask, which is royal blue with copper accents, yellow and green feathers, and blue and green ribbon, is called Taking Flight. I named it this because the copper accents resemble birds in the distance.

3. Plaid Adder: "Don't Tread On Me!"
Don’t Tread On Me
Plaid Adder

This mask is entitled 'Don't Tread On Me.' As far as concept goes, all I can tell you is I went into it thinking two things: "snakes" and "plaid." Later I decided to incorporate the two triangles at either side (pink on the right temple, lavender on the left) to represent GBLT identity. If you want to be deep about it, you can look at the mask as the concrete materialization of the Plaid Adder persona: “way too loud for everyday wear and a little rough around the edges."

It's papier-mache over a plastic form. The fabric helps keep it in place. Also, it has cowbells!

4. finecraft: "Tears of the Storm"
Tears of the Storm
finecraft

I have decided to call my mask "Tears of the Storm." My mask is based on a traditional venetian style jester mask. It is based with gold metallic paint, with an applied photo collage masking the eyes that depicts events that occurred during the evacuation of survivors from New Orleans. Five crystal "tears" line the bottom of each eye hole. The spikes around the outside of the mask are silk fabric transfers applied to a mardi gras style fabric, trimmed in gold braid, with bells attached to the points. The transfers are photos of New Orleans after the storm. Black mourning lace hangs from the bottom of the mask, covering the mouth area.

This mask is in honor of the multitudes of "plain ol' Americans" that so wanted to help the people of New Orleans and surrounding areas- but were turned away or turned down by the incompetency controlling FEMA. I've combined the style of Mardi Gras beads with superhero features.

6. wovenpaint: "New Orleans Mourning Mask"
New Orleans Mourning Mask
wovenpaint

(mixed media-feathers, hand beaded, sequined sheer fabric)
This signifies the spirit of New Orleans mourning the death and destruction of her city-and it's culture as we've known it. This mask is a full head, veiled mask inspired by Victorian mourning clothing, embellished with beads and feathers that so often adorn the Mardi Gras masks. The attached earrings are jumbled beads to echo the ruined beads that I envision to be in rooms across the city. Under the veil is the empty, painted face.
The veil can be pinned back if desired but the fabric is sheer enough to see through.

8. Generic Other: "Madame Marie Laveau"
Madame Marie Laveau
Generic Other

This handmade papier mache mask has been collaged to a ¼ inch thick hard shell finish using recycled brown paper bags. Pays homage to the spirit of Madame Laveau and her beloved city New Orleans. May her power protect the wearer from all evil:

The Voodoo Queen’s mask has been layered with torn strips of hand-stamped brocade-patterned brown paper reminiscent of antique wallpaper from the French Quarter.

Her elaborate “Brother can ya spare a dime” head piece was created from Democratic holy medals of St. FDR and lacrimosa teardrop pearls containing the tears of the poor and disinherited of NOLA.

Hanging from the sides are several fetish items:

A gris-gris ball filled with goofer dust collected at midnight from the conscience of a man with no soul in a graveyard filled with dead soldiers;

The reptilian claw of Prescott Bush. stolen from the Skull and Bones crypt by the ghost of Geronimo;

The George W. Bush “worry” doll (pins not included) encased in a mojo bag (formerly home to the Infant of Prague), held together with the tattered shreds of Old Glory, complete with a cryptic but powerful Chinese prophecy found in a fortune cookie;

A crucifix made of motes removed from the eyes of the hypocrites of the religious right;

Other items include Mr. Bojangles’ bones, a Mother Goddess miracle medal, and a skeleton key that opens the mythical holy grail of lock boxes said to contain the secret to Diebold’s source code.

As an added bonus, a magical assortment of blue glass and pink quartz crystal Mardi Gras Beads included, as well as divine Bling Bling from the wrinkled neck of Babs Bush.

All sprinkled with holy levee water from the grapes of wrath, vintage 2005.

I write romance novels. This one has ghosts of Mayan royalty in it. I am offering an autographed copy of Moon of the Jaguar. Be aware, though, that the book has detailed, anatomically correct sex in it. Nothing kinky or coercive, but definitely explicit.

I bid a million quatloos.

BTW, you won't be buying this from Amazon (boo-hiss). I only used them for the image of the cover. I'll send you an autographed author copy.

"With words as lush as the rainforest, as heady as the orchids, Alice Gaines weaves a moonlit spell which lures you deep into a sensual world of ancient Mayans and modern explorers, of love beyond time and danger beyond imaging."
--Marilynn Byerly, bestselling author of Time After Time

Moon of the Jaguar tells an exciting story about two people who are on several different kinds of quests. Ostensibly it is the quest for information about the Maya that brings them to the jungle, but to solve all of the mysteries and problems they confront, they must also learn more about themselves and each other, learning to trust in new ways. Moon of the Jaguar captured my interest right from the start and carried me along with the story, keeping me reading well into the night, until I reached its very satisfying conclusion.

76. Kliljedahl: "Zulu Coconuts"
Zulu Coconuts

Kliljedahl

My wife, who is from NO, would like to donate this decorated coconut. They are thrown by the Zulu Krewe:

They do not throw beads & other trinkets, they throw decorated coconuts. This one is from the early 70's.

They are very unique & highly prized.

"Of all the throws to rain down from the many floats in the parades during carnival, the Zulu coconut or "Golden Nugget" is the most sought after. The earliest reference to the coconut appears to be about 1910 when the coconuts were given from the floats in their natural "hairy" state. Some years later there is a reference to Lloyd Lucus, "the sign painter," scraping and painting the coconuts. This, in all likelihood, was the forerunner to the beautifully decorated coconuts we see today.

With the proliferation of lawsuits from people alleging injury from thrown coconuts, the organization was unable to get insurance coverage in 1987. So that year, the honored tradition was suspended. After much lobbying, the Louisiana Legislature passed SB188, aptly dubbed the "Coconut Bill," which excluded the coconut from liability for alleged injuries arising from the coconuts handed from the floats. On July 8, 1988, then-governor Edwards signed the bill into law."

I love this! What a great idea to have this auction. I've always thought that the turtle was my totem. I have no idea why. It's not something I've really looked into, or thought about. I've just always thought that it was.

edit: oops. I guess this was supposed to go under the first picture.

The turtle is believed to be sacred by Native Americans. They tell stories of how the first turtle swam the ocean and carried the land on her back. They say the beaver packed mud on the turtle's back and made the land that is now North America.

....I read about them on your website...and that quote I posted is from a Stephen King novel..he must know about that lore as he used the basic premise in his writing of The Dark Tower series and I just finished reading it...when I saw this I just HAD to bid on it because seeing this here...and the reason it's being offered...I want to be able to help fellow DU'ers who also happen to be from my native state....makin' that karmic wheel go around in the best o'ways.

I hope I'll be able to make it sing as beautifully as I heard it done on your website...extremely anxious to have this gem!! Thanks again for facinating me with it!! :loveya:

See the turtle of enormous girth
On his shell he holds the earth
His thought is slow but always kind
He holds us all within his mind
On his back all vows are made
He sees the truth but mayn't aid
He loves the land and loves the sea
And even loves a child like me

We are moving to New Mexico, and I am arranging one room of the new house into a music room, with my Italian virginal and recorders, and Himself's guitar, as well as sundry items of musically-themed decor and a cozy corner for quiet music-listening.

This will be a beautiful and functional addition to the room!

165. Funny Story abut Dave's Hot Sauce
My son and I were down in the Quarter once on one of our many adventures, and we stopped in a store across from Jackson Square that sold about a bazillion brands of hot sauce. My son, (being the manly-man of 19 at the time) decided to try some Dave's Insanity. The store had him sign a waiver first, saying they were not responsible for the result of him trying Dave's sauce. He put a couple drops on a cracker and ate it. All of a sudden, red welt-like patches suddenly appeared on his scalp and neck. Then his eyes started to tear up and water. He then started hyperventilating. I had a frozen margarita I was carrying with me, so I gave him the glass so he could drink something cool and start to focus and breathe....before he passed out. Now this is a child that was raised on hot sauce, so he was used to the hot sauce effect....but he was totally unprepared for Dave's. I went back to the store on another trip and bought a bottle of Dave's for him for Christmas as a joke. He gave the bottle to his dad.....who now uses it to kill weeds along our fence and driveway! Yes, at our house the bottle of Dave's sits along side the bottle of round-up on the hazardous chemical shelf in the garage! :)

they have an incredible number of different types of sauces. I bought a bottle of "Ass in the Tub" and a bottle of "Atomic Colon Cleanser", not for me, for my brother. He's another macho type who thinks he can eat anything hot. He didn't fare too well with either of these and now uses them, sparingly, in his beef jerky marinade. Great place, I hope they re-open, I AM looking forward to going back to NOLA, as sure as I know it's safe anyway.

193. Voodoo Pins
Pin Recipes:

I don't really go in for the old parlor trick of dipping pins in eyes of newt and such. Even witches fear the wrath of PETA.

I hear menstrual blood from an angry woman is pretty powerful. Or the ejaculation of serpents, but I have always found those items a wee bit hard to collect.

I favor traditional ingredients such as innocent tears shed in sorrow. I have heard this is a most poisonous substance when used against the guilty. One important element: get the cheapest pins you can find. If you are lucky, they will have been produced in some third-world country out of re-cycled radioctive scrap. Rusty pins. Pins from graveyard wreaths. Pins stolen from a church bulletin board are said to be powerful, but I have never found them to be any more so than other pins. Dip the pins in the tears. Such pins witness for truth and always find a way to prick the guilty.

Bob's Mask
Bob Boudelang

Essence of Boudelang:

"In which our extinguished Republican Team Leader did not get boiled as an owl and let his inner carnival out with glitter and feathers! That is just the politics of personal description, as practiced by Socialist Democraps and firebrant moderates!"

Note: It's hard to see on the photo, but the teeth are lovely shades of light yellow and green, just like Bob's, and the slogans are "Stop Saying That!!," "Our Great President Is Not A Incopmetet Drunk!" and "Lieberals!!"

$50 I'm not sure if this is how I'm supposed to do it. Am I the FIRST Pledge? :wtf: Come on DUers! We all can't afford to buy one of these fantastic masks and dolls, but we CAN pledge SOMETHING to our brothers and sisters in need.

I challenge all other DUers to Pledge what they can. Anything, from $5 to $500, it all adds up for our friends in need.

PLEDGE NOW! :yourock: :grouphug: :yourock:

186. wovenpaint: "Sacred Cat Mask"
Sacred Cat Mask
wovenpaint

(feather mask embellished with faux jewels w/headdress: heavyweight paper base painted with acrylic and applied sequined fabric and more faux jewels)

This mask is in memory of all the animals that lost their lives through no fault of their own. This cat symbolizes the animal spirit that met them at the Rainbow Bridge and helped them to cross. May they all be at peace now. It is a 2 piece mask that can be worn together or separately. The cone headdress is inspired by traditional Mardi Gras costumes.

197. Bluerthanblue: "Desire Unmasked"
Desire Unmasked
Bluerthanblue

This is a full face adult mask made of sculpy clay, on a floral-mesh wire
foundation. The dove is accented with feathers, and the mask has an elastic strap so it is fully wearable. Inside the top of the mask is a small cotton loop so that the face can also be used as a wall decoration. It is finished with an acrylic clear-coat, and the inside of the mask is lined with very sheer silk, to make it more 'face friendly.'

This mask began as a more traditional 'baroque style' one- but as it was being created, the dramatic eyebrows transformed themselves into wings, and the dove appeared, a reminder to always look upon all with peace as our guiding spirit- when we look outward with thoughts of compassion and peace, it will reflect back upon us, and fill our hearts and minds so that we can live without masks- bare-faced, and unashamed.

201. Give us
the old razzle dazzle
Razzle dazzle us
Give us an act with lots of flash in it
And the reaction will be passionate
Give us the old hocus pocus
Bread and feather us
How can we see with sequins in our eyes?

What if our hinges all are rusting?
What if, in fact, we're just disgusting ?

Razzle dazzle us
And we'll never catch wise!

Give us a show that's so splendiferous
Row after row will grow vociferous
Give us the old flim flam flummox
Fool and fracture us
How can we hear the truth above the roar?

Throw us a fake and a finagle
We'll never know you're just a bagel,
Razzle dazzle us
And we'll beg you for more!

Give us the old razzle dazzle
Razzle dazzle us
Back since the days of old Methuselah
We all love a big bambooz-a-ler

Give us the old three ring circus
Stun and stagger us
When we're in trouble, we go into your dance
Though you are stiffer than a girder
We let ya get away with a murder
Razzle dazzle us
And you've got a romance

Give us the old
Razzle dazzle
Razzle dazzle us
Give us an act that's unassailable
We'll wait four years 'til your available!

Give us the old
Double whammy
Daze and dizzy us
Show us the first rate sorcerer you are
Long as you keep us way off balance
How can we spot you got no talents?

Razzle dazzle us
And we'll make you a star!

202. Whaddya mean we got no talents??? LOL
I used the phrase "razzle dazzle," because I thought it best described the actions of the Mardi Gras Indians who had to mask themselves in order to participate in Mardi Gras. Their elaborate costumes and the chest pounding bravado that occurred when one "krewe" met another as they challenged each other for dominance could only be described as a "razzle dazzle" display.

The original Mardi Gras Indians were African Americans who lived in the city and were excluded from the celebrations of "polite society." I suspect their direct descendants were among those who found themselves abandoned in the city after Katrina. The irony should not be lost on us.

Nice song you posted. From Chicago? Another city with a rich history.

237. Can the end date be extended??? I only just saw this and would like
to make a mask! This is a wonderful idea!

I'm sure there would be many more responses if it were published in some of the other forums as well. Can that be done? I only saw it today because I happened to think that something I wanted to say fit better in the General Discussion than in the GD:Politics forum. I'm sure that many DUers would step forward to support our fellow DUer from NO if they were aware of this great auction!

And kudos to our great DU artists...these are truly beautiful masks.

240. I hope people will feel free to PLEDGE a donation. Anything helps!!
If you notice the stupid deadline of the auction 11:11:59 PM
you may wonder why the odd time. I meant to end the auction before the stroke of midnight just like Cinderella's curfew. Let's just call me number challenged.

I have no control over the rules of the game once set. I feel obligated to run a more clean auction than Flordia or Ohio run elections! For this reason, at 11:11:59 PM Eastern time (otherwise known as Generic Other time), the gavel must fall or Generic Other turns into a pumpkin.

My organizational skills could probably qualify me to run FEMA but little else.

Sorry you didn't hear about the auction in time. I was so grateful to Skinner for letting us pin this thread to the top in GD that I didn't want to be making a pest of myself plaguing other forums. I hope you will tell folks in GDpolitics to come on over!!

We are happy to take pledges, though. You can pledge to make a contribution to the cause.

We have so many DUers whose lives have been disrupted by the hurricane. The rest of us all know that a disaster of such dimensions in our areas of the country would leave most of us with very little to start over with, especially when the government's response is so pathetic.

We have to help each other if we can.

Please tell the folks in the GD/politics forum to come visit.

You're right of course, about changing the time. It wouldn't be fair to those who already made bids. I got so excited by thsi great idea that I didn't think it through.

I still would love to make a mask, and donate it to this effort, so could there be another one of these in a month or two (or just before date of the real Mardi Gras)? Let me know by PM if you do this. Thanks!

242. Check out this song: The Calinda (AUDIO)
The Calinda was a voodoo dance brought to Louisiana from San Domingo and the Antilles by slaves. Considered indecent by the respectable portion of the population, it was officially banned throughout the State in 1843, but continued to be performed for many years afterward.

An early version of the Calinda was danced only by men, stripped to the waist and brandishing sticks in a mock fight while at the same time balancing upon their heads bottles of water. As soon as a dancer spilled a drop of his water he was banished from the field. Later the Calinda degenerated into a thoroughly lascivious performance.

248. ********** THE AUCTION ENDS TONIGHT (PLEASE READ) **********
The Mardi Fras mask auction ends tonight at 11:59:59 PM Eastern Time (8:59:59 PM Pacific) -- and for the purposes of this auction, the DU message board time-stamp is the official clock.

As we mentioned earlier today, all bids made by 11:59:59 PM Eastern Time are considered valid. Sometime tomorrow or Monday, we will go through the bids and declare a winner for each auction. The winners will all be posted publicly, and each winner will be contacted with instructions for making payment.

Once payment has been received, the winner of each auction and the artist who created the mask must contact each other directly to arrange shipping.

Thank you to everyone who has participated in this auction.
