23% think Hurricane Katrina was a "deliberate act of God"
Edited on Sun Oct-09-05 04:32 PM by Bluebear
"There is a substantial segment of very fundamentalist opinion."

Among the effluvia washed up in the wake of Hurricane Katrina was the view of an Alabama state senator that the storm was "the judgment of God" on a supposedly debauched corner of the country.

"New Orleans and the Mississippi Gulf Coast have always been known for gambling, sin and wickedness," Sen. Henry E. "Hank" Erwin Jr. said in a column, according to the Birmingham News. "It is the kind of behavior that ultimately brings the judgment of God.

"Warnings year after year by godly evangelists and preachers went unheeded. So why were we surprised when finally the hand of judgment fell?" asked Erwin, who, according to his Alabama State Senate Web page, has a B.A. from Southwestern Bible College and an M.A. from Dallas Seminary. "Sadly, innocents suffered along with the guilty. Sin always brings suffering to good people as well as the bad."...

But there was still 23 percent of respondents who think recent storms are "a deliberate act of God" - as opposed to an occurrence on God's Earth (or the 10 percent who do not believe in God or had no view on the issue).

6. They must not know their scripture.
God promised to never again use a flood to kill.
I can understand how they gloss over that little bit of myth...Rainbows are involved.

7. Innocents suffered along with the guilty!
God needs to get a rifle, too much collateral damage with a shotgun.

Shouldn't an all seeing, all powerful being be able to hit just the target, and not everyone standing around it?

This reasoning for god's punishment never seemed right to me.

9. Haven't they ever thought it might be God punishing America
for killing innocent Iraqis, a direct result of their idiot leader's actions (an equally stupid theory)? This must be the percentage who would still support Shrub if he sacrificed virgins on live TV.

11. Idiots.
Why do they use catastrophic weather events for their bullshit? They could use an individual catastrophic illnesses like-- oh, say the leukemia rates in children. There is nothing more heartbreaking than watching a child suffer. And you don't get more innocence. This attitude is on a par with that to me. "Innocents suffer along with sinners" Fuck you Erwin, whoever you are. If there was a hell there would have to be a special section for people like you, and that 23% right along to keep you company.

14. it's worse than that
"One recent report by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press determined that a majority of Americans (64%) favor the idea that public schools should teach the Biblical version of the creation of the world on a par with the theory of evolution, and 38% favor the complete elimination of Darwinism form school curriculums."

16. What an absolute asshole! As a proud south Mississippian....
I refute this garbage: "New Orleans and the Mississippi Gulf Coast have always been known for gambling, sin and wickedness," Sen. Henry E. "Hank" Erwin Jr. said in a column, according to the Birmingham News. "It is the kind of behavior that ultimately brings the judgment of God." If that were true, the whole state of Alabama would have been incinerated ages ago. Everything that's done openly and legally in Louisiana and Mississippi is done secretly and with lying hypocrisy elsewhere, and I'd be willing to bet *hehehe* by "Hank" Erwin Jr. and most of his compadres. He needs to be looking to the beams in his own eyes before checking out the motes in the eyes of his neighbors.

18. I'm Confused, Are not all Acts of God deliberate?
I would not imagine that God makes mistakes, or misses. I don't imagine that God would send a hurricane and then say "Oops" when it takes out God fearing Central Florida instead of the Evil Gambling Gulf Coast of Mississippi or Wicked New Orleans. That would actually be a lot of misses if you go back even just a year or so. I'm just sayin..
