We must make it clear that these charges have, at their root, the purpose of selling lies to the American people about Iraq and its threat.

Destroying Wilson was directly about destroying the TRUTH of what was going on in Iraq, i.e. NO nuclear capability (no yellow-cake purchase).

sure, we see bits of it but in order to get to the essence of it all we need information that we are unlikely to ever get. And I know there are risks in assuming too paranoid a perspective because it leads one into all sorts of implausible reasons that have no basis in fact or are just downright febrile.

Nevertheless, it now seems unlikely that the war was started for anything other than furthering an agenda that is quite seperate from humanitarian considerations or removing a dictator. Were either of those reasons to be tenable thousands of people would still be alive today and dictators who are still oppressing whole countries would be locked up.

I'm no better informed than anyone else and I'm not sufficiently pompous to think I know the answer. Many people who are better informed than me have wrestled with the issues without getting a clear answer; so my hypotheses are no more valid than theirs.

However, I now believe that we are in one sorry mess. I cannot see it ending quickly, nor can I see it ending happily. In order to try to get back on the road to a relatively sane world we need to ask ourselves WHO had the ability to control the agenda, WHY this has happened and WHAT the mechanisms were. We probably have a reasonable idea about the first point: We need to focus on the other two issues. The investigation has to be an analysis of "means, motive and opportunity". That is probably necessary because what has happened is criminal...criminal investigations proceed on that basis.

Like many of you I feel utterly depressed...something in the air perhaps.
