3. Maybe December...Maybe
That was the word Leahy was floating around about a week ago.

The person to watch here is Arlen Specter. He's in control of this show and doesn't seem to be in too much of a hurry. Remember, he's part of that gang of 14 where the real power in this Senate lies and without strong support Miers is in big time trouble. Specter can delay the hearings if he doesn't see the votes for confirmation or he suspects games from the White House. He's in quite a unique situation here.

Keep in mind, there's no love lost between Specter and the boooosh regime...especially over the bitch-slapping they gave him last fall to hold onto his chairmanship. The Senator from Scotland hasn't forgotten and payback is a bitch.

One more think to keep in mind. O'Connor has assured Specter that she'd stay on the bench through the current session...that goes until May. Roberts was more important as there truly was a vacancy and no Chief Justice...with O'Connor staying on, the urgency to confirm Meirs is far less.

Personally, I doubt we'll ever have the pleasure of seeing Ms. Miers testify. The selling job of the Repugnicans aren't going that smoothly and with so many other storms brewing above, this regime doesn't have either the political capital or the energy to fight both right and left on this nomination. Methinks the hope is that the "real" candidate...Gonzalez or Janice Rogers Brown or some other "strict constructionist" will be put in her place and this regime will spin it as some great victory.
