The man who was beaten in NO is on GMA right now
He said he was taken by complete surprised. He heard a woman screaming "the man didn't do anything! Stop!" and he heard the cops yell at her to move away.

He was walking around a police horse and his back was to the cops that grabbed him and from there, it all happened so fast he couldn't quite comprehend what was suddenly going on. He hasn't seen the tapes yet. His family kept him away from the tv because they didn't want him to see it.

HE JUST SAID HE DOESN'T DRINK! HE HASN'T HAD A DRINK IN OVER 25 YEARS!

When asked if he resisted arrest, he responded with "how can you resist arrest when you suddenly get sucker punched, thrown to the ground and choked?"

2. He asked the cop on horseback a question about curfew.
Edited on Tue Oct-11-05 07:29 AM by Connie_Corleone
Another cop came up to him and started cussing him out. The man told the cop he was being unprofessional. After he finished his conversation with the cop on horseback, he turned around and went across the street. Then someone hit him from behind.

11. Sounds to me like this was the trigger
Cops ego went off about the unproffesional comment. They are going to have a lot of time to think about just how right the guy was while sitting in jail.

33. I'm Not Too Sure About The Knee-jerk Part.
This seems to be carefully crafted. I watched the Abrams Report (don't ask)last-night while they floated this turd. They slowly worked up to it with a statement from this doctor and the esteemed :eyes: panel until all the sudden they were exonerated. All without a single mention of the obvious hypocrisy they were displaying. Carefully thought out and planned in my book.

31. I'm so tired of the "race was not the issue" bullshit
I can buy the argument that they're stressed but they unleashed a world of hurt on a man who did not look like them, did not look like their friends or their family members. Would they have been this brutal to a white man? Do we really want to kid ourselves into pretending that they would?

I'm tired of skirting around the issue of race in this country. I thought we would have an honest conversation after Katrina but it never fully surfaced. Now this. How much unnecessary violence and death must be thrown into our faces before we admit that racism is still a major problem in America?

My husband spoke at the wake of a friend, and he was the only one who mentioned the racism our friend endured. It was just uncanny.

Its crack for the control freaks in the world, and sadly some cops are control freaks of the worst kind.

I think Crawfords local Law Enforcemnet could give a few of these nuts some lessons. That police force was really the most understanding and empathetic that I had ever seen, anywhere.

3. On CNN, Miles O'Brien ...
when speaking to the police association representative ... pointed out that he (Miles) could not envision any situation that "could" have occurred off camera that would justify the horrific abuse suffered by that man.

Witness to the events immediately prior to the attack and during seem to be at a loss for what could have precipitated such an attack.

Certainly it is possible that the victim said something out of line ... but a verbal insult (which appears unlikely that the victim even did that) never justifies such a violent attack.

49. "blame the victim"
I'm sure this will be trotted out....of course this elderly man who hasn't had a drink in 25 years deserved a Bourbon St. beatdown from NO's finest.

Don't believe your lying eyes. Three young, in-shape white cops had to beat the shit out of that elderly black man. I mean, isn't it obvious he was a threat?

I hope he told one of them that he fucked one of their girlfriends/wives the night before and he wanted a refund...that would've justified the beating that poor man endured. And "resisting arrest?" Give me a fucking break....some maniac attacks me without provocation, be they transient or police officer, I'm definitely putting up some fucking resistance.

16. Could the cops be suffering from PTSD?
Could the stress over what happened with Katrina be the reason behind this horrible beating? These cops attacked this man in front of people for what seems like no reason whatsoever. Men over the edge or just a group of assholes who got caught?

For whatever the reason for their abusive behavior, I hope they get psychological help on top of their punishment. I also hope the victim and his family find peace.

19. assholes who got caught.
frankly, we only hear about police beatings IF someone happens to get it on tape...and even then the police deny it. They happen all the time to people of color.

I used to live in Los Angeles, before the Rodney King beating, and knew hispanic people and african american people...not criminals, normal citizens. EVERY person of color I knew had a police brutality story they themselves witnessed. And I only knew a handful.

But they never did anything about it, because WITHOUT a camera, its the citizen's word against the cops. In a court, guess who wins?

you better believe it: without the footage, nothing would even be getting talked about at this point.

22. Very true. unfortunately.
The first thought I had when I first saw the video of this particular beating was "how many times is this happening all across this country that I don't know about?" I also get angry knowing that this makes it even harder for the cops who don't go around beating the citizens they swore to protect.

Someone in a different thread suggested that police academies start doing better psych testing to (hopefully) prevent this crap from happening. I think this is a good idea.

No, these cops have BFVPS

BIG FAT VIOLENT PIG SYNDROME

They are sick wackos who enjoy hurting others. Welcome to your system of American Justice. These are the kinds of guys in law enforcement these days, the kind running prisons.

It makes me so thankful to know good cops who would never exhibit this vile, hate-filled, out-of-control behavior.

36. Good cop bad cop... I feel ya. Just remember Crawford and how good and
sincere they were with us down there for the most part.

I despise about a fourth to a third of this countries police forces (my estimate of how many are corrupt or just violent minded jerks), and I wish fervently that the rest of them would step up and get rid of these betrayers of law and order. They would just get threatened or killed.. though, I guess.
