New York threats were a hoax
Informant admits providing false information. Breaking on CNN.

Who would have 'thunk' that? Give me a break please. We knew.

20. Bush psy-op against who? Bloomberg or the city?
That is to say, what does Bush gain by hurting Bloomberg? Yes, New York is a blue state, but Bush gains nothing by hurting Bloomberg's election chances. The other theory is that Bloomberg used it as a "legitmate" excuse to back out of debating in Harlem, allowing him to avoid openly courting the minority vote. I could see how DHS would take offense at that, especially if they really did tell him that the info was most likely bogus.

31. Bush psy-op against all us sheep
The Plame investigation is heating up. Time for a terrism (sic) speech, and then, just on cue, a terrist (sic) attack, so Junior can say, "See? I told ya so!"

Meanwhile, they're also busy ramping up as much panic as they can about "bird flu".

35. Precisely!!!! Home Depot profited from the duct tape--and Ridge
was connected to that (and I think he was on the Home Depot board). Now it's the pharmaceutical companies' turn to get another huge windfall. After all, it's been 4 whole years since their big windfall from the Cipro "shortages" back when everyone was protecting against the anthrax attacks.

I believe the anthrax attacks were orchestrated by someone in league with the neocon warmongers. I believe the original idea was to have the anthrax attacks happen, then, later, to link them to Saddam Hussein. Obviously the second half of that plan didn't quite work. But I believe that was to be the big hysteria-stirrer to make everyone say "nuke Iraq!" the way everyone was saying "nuke bin Laden!" after the WTC.

There was a Dr. Phillip Zack who may have been tied to the anthrax matter. Has he ever been investigated? Of course not. Instead, the feds went after Hatfill--whom they knew would be a dead end.

14. NYT - Threat Discounted, New York Eases Subway Alert
">snip

But Mr. Bloomberg and other city officials were adamant yesterday that they had made the right decision, to go public with the report and heighten security. New York officials described the threat last week as alarming for its specificity and timing, noting that information on the possible plot was strong enough to prompt a military operation that swept up three Iraqi men thought to be involved.

City officials also reiterated yesterday that they would much rather risk frightening and inconveniencing New Yorkers than be caught unprepared for an attack.

Law enforcement officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity because the information in the case is classified, said that an American investigation, conducted largely in Iraq, has yielded no evidence that a plot was in motion or being actively contemplated. The outlines of the alleged plot, based on the word of an informant, were that Al Qaeda operatives in Iraq were coordinating with others, some perhaps already in New York, to hide bombs in baby strollers, packages and briefcases and blow them up in subways.

But the officials said that after taking the three men into custody last week in Iraq, they found no fake passports, no travel documents, no viable travel route from Iraq to New York, and no apparent contact or telephone calls from those in Iraq to people in New York. In addition, the officials said that two of the men detained in Iraq had been given polygraph tests that indicated they were not part of any plot.

Could this mean that the politically motivated reporting of terror alerts - as reported 5 months ago in Capitol Hill Blue - might actually be true?

Is that why Ridge publicly declared his disagreement with most of these alerts? Because he knew it would come out eventually?

26. Well, we demonstrate once more that we are fully terrorized
Edited on Tue Oct-11-05 11:09 AM by HereSince1628
OBL and other terrorists have succeeded in leveraging fear into an effective control of the United States.

Now mere words (often lies) told on the opposite side of the world are sufficient cause our authorities to disrupt the lives of 10s if not 100s of thousands, and force government into costly deployment of first responders.

This is a very important development for potential terrorist tactics. Not only is it a tool in its own right, a well leaked plot could decoy security assets and attention away from actual terrorist targets.

28. While true, I think the focus here should be narrower.
If I recall, DHS was not recommending raising the alert, it was Bloomie all by himself. Bloomie heard the rumor and had a panic attack.

Unless he was lied to, he would have been told that the claim was coming from a single source, with no coroboration or known reliability.

The terrorists have won.

30. Well, you agree the terrorist have won, and I agree NY mayor
put the response in motion.

The mayor said early on he had conflicting reports. What could a responsible person do with that? In the absence of other information I think I would make the same mistake he did by erring on the side that provides protection to the community, just in case.

Maybe the feds should have been more revealing about the nature of the source. But if this was a mihop operation n the part of neocons trying to protect Bush? The mayor would have been just as subject to being misled.

32. Exactly. That's why the Clinton Admin's reponse to some attacks
Edited on Tue Oct-11-05 12:01 PM by leveymg
(e.g., the '93 WTC bombing, the downing of TWA Flt. 800 a year later) was to publicly downplay them or even to pretend that they weren't terrorism at all. The term is minimalization.

Few people know that John O'Neill played along with this game in the early 1990s, and that he was the principal FBI investigator and spokesperson in the Flt. 800 case. Despite the numerous eye-witnesses who saw the upward arc of what was almost surely a ground-to-air missile that evening, and the explosive residue found on recovered pieces of wreckage, the feds had to strain credibility very, very far in order to claim that a 747 had been brought down by an electrical fault in a fuel pump.

While deception of the public is wrong, at least the Clinton Administration had a strategy of how to deal with the inherent pyschological advantage that terrorists enjoy. Absent extreme counter-measures (such as minimalization), terrorists usually do succeed, at least part way, in their goals of provoking fear and over-reaction.

When partisan politicians -- such as the Bush Admin. and Mayor Bloomberg --play the game the other way, by trumpeting and exploiting terrorist threats for political effect, they actually increase the damage of terrorist attacks, and aid and abet terrorism.
