Thanks To DU and the posters here!!
Edited on Tue Oct-11-05 03:06 PM by Neil Lisst
I've joined recently, and I'm making a donation, to put my money where my mouth is. I've also included a SHOUT OUT to the mods and posters at DU on my daily political comic, called Neil Lisst. I've included a plea for people to check out the DU and support it financially. It's read in 53 countries, so it has some international readers. I'll probably use DU as the backdrop for some future comics.

Most of my stuff is harsh on Bush, the pukes, and the rightwing media, but I hold Dems to task, too, for what I perceive as leadership failures.

For those who have allowed me to mention the comic, thank you.

For those who have looked at the comic, thank you. I hope you'll review the table of contents and see some of the prior stuff. Neil Lisst was born of my anger and sadness at the horror of New Orleans following Katrina. That is why the first comic is August 29th, the day Katrina hit.

Today's comic isn't really political at all, but relates to something funny that happened with NBC's Brian Williams on the IMUS show. I try to throw in some lighter stuff once or twice a week. Tomorrow, I tee off on Scott McClelland, and on Thursday, it's Bush and Rove.

Thanks.

Tomorrow's comic I hope will be both political and funny.

It involves Scott McClelland.

11. Because it's reported to us as a separate country ....
Same with Virgin Islands. Although both are part of the US, we list them as countries. It's just to note the various places we have readers. Frankly, I'm shocked at some of them, too. Someone has set up a site that translates Neil Lisst text into other languages.

We've only had him online a month.

35. ok
it's just something that keeps catching my attention, i know there's a movement to have a free and separate P. Rico, but i don't know the politics or the likelihood of that, and i was actually maybe hoping you were making a point one way or the other. this would belong in another discussion area, no doubt.

That your site is up and doing well and is so widely read by howevermany countries is really great.

12. mshasta, thanks!
Appreciate the comments. We welcome feedback.

Posting helps me think of storylines and, hopefully, punchlines.

As with any character, it takes time to reveal various aspects of the character. That's why I ran the cell phone series a couple of weeks ago, so we get to hear him interact with his parents and others.

I've asked someone who works for me to order some T-shirts, so I can contribute that way, but that will take a few days. In the meantime, I wanted to let readers know about DU and maybe send a few here.

I usually link any site I like that I mention in a comic, but today I figured to include DU even though it is not in the comic. I'll have a set this month where Neil is online, computer screen in front of him, and it will show the DU message board. Then I'll use that template for 2-3 days comments on things political.

Having a darker character makes punchlines harder, because the comments have to be consistent with the strip and the character's personality. As I tell my cartoonist partner, our topics can't be funny every day. Some of this is too deadly to be funny. My early comics on Katrina were that way. Nothing there to laugh at, or even smile about, just profound sadness and disappointment that America didn't come when our brothers and sisters needed us there.

Because if you are, that's cool.

I'm not troubled by people who are hostile. It's a free country, and the answer to speech one doesn't like is their own voice.

Edited on Tue Oct-11-05 06:42 PM by Neil Lisst
If you want to check it out, yesterday's comic was about Bush and Terror Alerts.

Tomorrow is Scott McClelland and his responses on Plamegate.

Thursday is Bush and Rove trashing the constitution.

Friday is still open. I've written one around a comment made by Atommom here a day or two ago. If it comes together appropriately, I'm going with it on Friday.

27. Meganmonkey, GREAT!
I'm so excited when someone reads the library.

You can't get a good feel for a cartoon character except by reading weeks of his comics. Just like a real person, the character has to allow you to get to know him, to see insights into his relationships.

For example, his political, bombastic, cynical father is obviously one reason Neil thinks AND behaves as he does. He is not the same type of mix-it-up brawler his dad is. He's a quieter, more reflective person who sees a lot more than he comments on.

I try to build some of all us into him. The cell phone stuff, for example. The parents who are loving but not quite ready to let go of their little boy.

Welcome, good political commentary formed into humor. Bookmarked your page and will visit each day, site hits should help if you try to syndicate. Maybe you can become another Gary T.

Never hurts to have sources for ideas and behind the scenes understanding, thats what I like about Doonesbury. DU and the blogs should give these things, if you can sift through the BS and get to the 'real' meat.

Again, welcome and good luck.

30. Jose Diablo - great name
Thanks for your good words. You're right about hits. We are running strongly every day, but a solid daily readership takes time. You have to get readers hooked, and that means you have to get them to make repeated trips to your site on different days.

We are running the comic on a site that is all comics, has hosted over 400 there. We have run first for the day more than half the days we have been online at the site, and we are running 6th all time already. Out of all those, only a handful are political comics.

BTW, I am writing another comic that I intend to have a much broader audience, of the Mister Boffo variety. I won't reveal his name, but I've already drawn him and his next door neighbor, Jose, who will be a regular. I've written three months worth already, but we're not going to launch that one until January.

Politics is my passion. Comics are my pleasure.
