"Please don't take this personally...that I've fired you, trashed you,
taken you off our "guest list." "After all, it's only about business."

How many DU'ers have heard this..and if you did, what did you think when it was said..and what were the circumstances?

"It's NOT PERSONAL...it's just "about Business."

3. Well, I've been laid off a couple of times....
due to "company restructuring."

But I've never been treated badly...in fact, both times the companies were very generous with their severance packages.

Why...did something like this happen to you?

7. I was laid off in August and my boss
who is about 6'5" and an ex-college offensive lineman started crying when he delivered the news. Hell, I had to make him feel better b/c he was just the messenger. On a brighter note, I have a much better job now. Probably the best thing that has happened to me.

5. I think that is an absurd justification for "doing business as usual"
I think, when it involves humans IT IS PERSONAL. It's a little ditty that the "business" people use to rationalize and justify their hideous behavior disguised as "business" what a crock. Of course it's personal it involves PEOPLE. This is a way they can put "business" (ie MONEY) AHEAD OF PEOPLE and feel good about it. It's sick.

It reminds of the movie "You've Got Mail" when Meg Ryan's character says, "what is that? Shouldn't whatever we have begin as personal."

to get your ass kicked and be shown no respect.

Anyway, how else can you take getting fired, except personally?

8. I'm not getting it...I have been layed off twice
and both times my bosses went out of their way helping me. Writing letters of recommendations, giving me leads, etc. And both times it was about business and I knew it before they had to do it.

11. I've hired good people
laid off good people, and fired good people. It really is just business, when it comes down to it. When the company I was with at the time had a downsizing, as a dept. head it was up to me to be the bearer of the bad news.

It was personal for me and the employee involved, but the main office was insulated from the shop floor.

The only time that I got upset was when I had to lay off a new hire that was recently married, and had asked our supervisor if there was a chance of losing his job soon as he was about to buy a new car. My boss told him not to worry, and a month later I was told to let him go as business couldn't justify his hours. My boss knew that he was going to be laid off when he told the kid everything was fine. Rat bastard.

12. Of course it's personal, unless one is decommissioning a robot.
Person+al = personal.

Heartless capitalists say it's "about business."
