Raw Story: CIA leak widens to probe 'broader conspiracy'...
Edited on Tue Oct-11-05 10:11 PM by kohodog
Report: Lawyers say investigation into CIA leak widens to probe 'broader conspiracy' around Iraq

There are signs that prosecutors now are looking into contacts between administration officials and journalists that took place much earlier than previously thought, the Wall Street Journal will report Wednesday, RAW STORY can reveal. Excerpts from the coming story:

Earlier conversations are potentially significant, because that suggests the special prosecutor leading the investigation is exploring whether there was an effort within the administration at an early stage to develop and disseminate confidential information to the press that could undercut former Ambassador Joseph Wilson and his wife, Central Intelligence Agency official Valerie Plame.

Mr. Fitzgerald's pursuit now suggests he might be investigating not a narrow case on the leaking of the agent's name, but perhaps a broader conspiracy.

Lawyers familiar with the investigation believe that at least part of the outcome likely hangs on the inner workings of what has been dubbed the White House Iraq Group. Formed in August 2002, the group, which included Messrs. Rove and Libby, worked on setting strategy for selling the war in Iraq to the public in the months leading up to the March 2003 invasion. The group likely would have played a significant role in responding to Mr. Wilson's claims.

And I know I'm not alone in that belief! Most people on DU suspected this for months!

5. Wow! that will have to unravel *'s whole Iraq game
Beautiful - then Condi will be squarely roped into the whole thing (I hate that she seem to have escaped almost unscathed) and of cause others that have been lying about their roles in the Iraq debacle will also be exposed. What a great day that will be!

6. This earlier interview with Wilson now seems very significant!
http://www.cnn.com/2003/ALLPOLITICS/09/29/cnna.wilson.zahn/

ZAHN: And why do you think you're at the receiving end of all this?

WILSON: Well, I had assumed early on that it was probably because the White House wanted to discourage others from coming forward. And I have said that repeatedly, that there was nothing they could do to me. I had already told my story.

The accuracy or the validity, the veracity, of my story had been sort of agreed to by the White House 36 hours or 30 hours after my article appeared in The New York Times. There was nothing particularly to be gained by going after me. But you might want to discourage other people from stepping forward. There were a number of people at the time who were speaking off the record to journalists about pressures that they felt out at the CIA.

Whether those were accurate or not, those were the stories that were going around. So I thought that it might be directed at them.

So, the leak could very well have served as a warning to any others who were planning to come forward on the real situation with WMD in Iraq.
This could very well be the wider conspiracy.

14. Let's hope
It really sounds like Fitzgerald's uncovered the whole neocon/Iraq plan. But I was wondering how he could charge them with anything beyond the leak? The leak is illegal under the Espionage Act, but a "conspiracy" isn't illegal unless it's to further an illegal act. If Fitzgerald's investigating a "larger conspiracy," what would be the other illegal actions that he's looking at?
