Rick Santorum, Ticket Scalping and U2
There have been a flurry of posts about the U2 concert and how supposedly U2 & Bono 'arranged' a concert fundraiser for Rick Santorum at their October 16th concert in Philadelphia. This is a misconception made-up by someone in the Santorum campaign and promoted by Newsmax to make it sound like that Bono was willing to raise money for Rick Santorum. However, when you do the research you'll find that it's a ploy by repukes to associate Rick Santorum with a popular band in hopes to bring in some votes from U2 fans.

About 2 months ago I was outraged thinking that the Rolling Stones were actually going to host a fundraiser concert for Arnold Schwarzenegger. However a few days later we found out that the Stones had no involvement, just some wealthy fans of Arnold who managed to have access to a luxury box at a Boston venue and sold tickets as a fundraiser for the Gropernator's re-election campaign. The Rolling Stones, just like U2 with the Santorum fundraiser, have no control over who buys the tickets or how they are used.

The original story about the fundraiser came from NewsMax which should have raised the red flag for all of us. They twisted the story to make it sound like U2 & Bono were on board for supporting Rick Santorum. Even Rush Limbaugh jump on the Bono bandwagon thinking that somehow Bono turned into one of them. And from what I was told the story made it to CNN.

But a quick check to U2's official Website had a message that was dated today with the following statement:

11.10.2005
Political Fundraisers (Not)
DATA have posted a statement reacting to 'inaccurate media statements on U2 shows as political fundraisers.'

We're posting the statement here because we've had a number of emails expressing concern about certain media stories people have read.

Jamie Drummond, Executive Director of DATA (debt AIDS trade Africa), the Africa Advocacy group co-founded by Bono said this earlier today:

'Throughout the U2 tour, politicians from both sides have been organizing fundraisers at the venues or around specific shows. Neither DATA or Bono are involved in these and they cannot be controlled. The U2 concerts are categorically not fundraisers for any politician - they are rock concerts for U2 fans.'

Don't believe everything you read!

I also checked DATA's website (an African Relief organization) and they came out with an almost identical statement. You have to admit that U2 & Data both are class acts because they could have ripped a new one for the Santorum campaign to misrepresent the concert fundraiser but they showed tact by making a blanket statement that U2 does concert benefits for charity NOT political fundraisers.

Finally, there was some talk about the exuberant prices for the resale of U2 concert tickets. About a month ago I starting researching how to get tickets for a sold out Green Day concert at the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia (BTW, same venue as the U2 concert and Santorum fundraiser). I learned alot about ticket scalping laws and how you can go about purchasing tickets through brokers in the state. Basically scalping is illegal and only licensed brokers can resell tickets and then only at a certain value above the cost of the ticket. So naturally my first assumption was there was some illegal activities going on with the resale of those tickets. Well, further research finds that there are exemptions for fund-raising activities and charitable organizations; municipal ordinances superseded. Since technically the tickets are being resold as a fundraiser for Rick Santorum - they $1000 price-tag is legal. http://www.ncsl.org/programs/lis/ticketscalplaws.htm

But hopefully we'll be more attune next time we see Republican 'fundraisers' at popular rock concerts. The musicians have nothing to do with it and technically have no control over how the tickets are used that are purchased for the concert. The best they can do is issue a statement like U2 did that states they aren't involved and hope that the media, like CNN, will retract their incorrect stories (CNN was shocked to find out they reported a false story). It also helps that when we hear shocking stories like this that we research first before we assume the worst (which technically I did at first). We can also help out by outing these misrepresentations as desperate acts by desperate politicians who are hurting so badly in the poll that they would try and trick people by associating themselves with certain popular musicians even if the musicians have shown no involvement with that candidate. Santorum is behind by 18 points in Pennsylvania against leading candidate Bob Casey. So what better way to help win a few votes over by making it seem like Bono & U2 were endorsing Santorum. When we see this stuff online we need to get the word out that this is nothing more than a ruse to dupe voters.

4. Thanks for telling more about this
And I doubt with the song "Sweet Neocon" the Rolling Stones would do a fundraiser for Arnie. What's going to happen to Santorum if he gets money from the scalping?

8. The tickets are legal
The law has exceptions for fundraisers and even though it's not a popular fundraiser idea here at DU it is still nonetheless a fundraiser

5. This could backfire!
If the band disliked being used as a fundraising tool they could "improvise".
Wouldn't that be fun?

7. I'm sure the Rolling Stones did "Sweet Neo-Con" in Boston
So yes, U2 could have fun with the Santorum fundraiser. And believe me, Bono is vocal enough to speak out about the injustices in the world and how we need to forgive 3rd world debt - not exactly important subjects for repuke donors

That could be fun.

15. Here's hoping that U2 gets a political song out for themselves...
... so that they can make it clear which side of the fence they stand on to avoid getting lumped with these Rethugs. Something like "Sweet Neocon"...

12. thanks for getting this out there
I am one of the people who sent emails to the U2.com website yesterday. Glad they got out a statement so fast. Hope this gets bumped for a day or two so people can relax and not think U2 has gone over to the other side or something

13. How much did they charge for the Arnold fundraiser - check this out
I found a link about anti-scalping laws across the country. PA has an exception for fundraisers so we really couldn't sic the law on the Santorum fundraisers.

But then I scrolled up and checked out Massachusetts:
http://www.ncsl.org/programs/lis/ticketscalplaws.htm

State: Massachusetts
Cite: M.G.L.A. 140 § 185A
Requires License: Yes
Prohibited
Type of ticket: Theatrical exhibition, public show or amusement
Penalty: Fine $500 or less; subsequent = fine + jail time no more than a year
Notes: Licensed by commissioner of public safety; price not to exceed $2.00 + "service charges" (messengers, postage, telephone calls)
(BTW, it was the notes section where I found the fundraiser exception for PA

http://www.mass.gov/legis/laws/mgl/140-185a.htm
CHAPTER 140. LICENSES
THEATRICAL EXHIBITIONS, PUBLIC AMUSEMENTS, ETC.

Chapter 140: Section 185A Resale of tickets; necessity, term and transfer of license; information in application; definition of resale; restrictions

No person shall engage in the business of reselling any ticket or tickets of admission or other evidence of right of entry to any theatrical exhibition, public show or public amusement or exhibition required to be licensed under sections one hundred and eighty-one and one hundred and eighty-two of this chapter or under chapter one hundred and twenty-eight A, whether such business is conducted on or off the premises on which such ticket or other evidence is to be used, without being licensed therefor by the commissioner of public safety, in this and the six following sections called the commissioner. A license shall be granted only upon a written application setting forth such information as the commissioner may require. Each license issued under this section shall be in force until the first day of January next after its date, unless sooner revoked. No such license may be transferred or assigned except upon written permission of the commissioner. Here's the ticket: a private evening rockin' the night away with Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger during the kickoff of the Rolling Stones' "A Bigger Bang'' U.S. tour on Aug. 21 at Boston's Fenway Park.

Here's the bottom line: $10,000 a pop to get in on a private preconcert reception and front-and-center seats to watch the show -- or $100,000 to sit with the governor in his luxury box.

The eyebrow-raising event is one of a cluster of glitzy fundraisers the star-power governor will headline in the next few weeks as he seeks to arm his campaign fund with $50 million in preparation for the Nov. 8 special election -- which will determine the fate of his political agenda and, observers say, his chances for re-election in 2006.

Santorum Panned U2 In His Book For Espousing "No Fault Liberalism"

NewsMax's misleading story that U2's Bono is raising money for Santorum is particularly interesting since in his book, It Takes A Family, Santorum describes Bono as satanic and ties U2 to the liberal view of society that Senator Rick hates so much. It's also noteworthy that Santorum is more than willing to stomach U2 when he's raising money for his campaign. His hypocrisy knows no bounds.

On page 14 of his tome, Santorum writes that liberals define freedom as "without limits (with the obligatory caveat that you can't hurt anyone else directly). But someone always gets hurt when masses of indiviudals do what is only in their self-interest. That is the great lie of liberal freedom, or as I like to say, 'No-Fault Freedom' (all of the choice, none of the responsiblity). When I listen to the rock group U2's latest hit 'Vertigo,' which criticixes the dizzying culture surrounding us, a chill goes through me when I hear Bono sing, in a satanic voice, 'All of this, all of this can be yours -- just give me what I want and no one gets hurt.'

Santorum continues: "No one gets hurt? Believers in No-Fault Freedom turn a blind eye to the damage such a notion of freedom causes not to this or that individual but to society as a whole."

On pages 264 and 265, Santorum writes: "The world liberals see is one in which each of us is an island entire unto ourselves, supported by the village elders, doing what pleases us, as the U2 song says, 'as long as nobody gets hurt.' Except that everybody gets hurt."

16. Santorum:
the frothy mix of lube and fecal matter that is sometimes the byproduct of anal sex.

(Sorry, every time I see that name, I just can't resist).

17. Funniest reaction from a Freeper (when they believed the story)
One of them actually wanted to give Bono Kofi Annan's job.

And no, I'm not making that up.

Actually, I think Bono would do a great job running the UN. And he would have certainly been better at the World Bank than Wolfie the War Criminal.
