Colgate to close toothpaste plant

Colgate to close toothpaste plant

The Associated Press
Published October 11, 2005, 1:42 PM CDT

CLARKSVILLE, Ind. -- Colgate-Palmolive Co. told workers Tuesday that its 500-employee plant that makes most of the company's U.S. toothpaste supply will close by January 2008.

The shutdown, which was unexpected by union leaders, will happen in stages, said Larry Edwards, president of United Food and Commercial Workers Local 15.

Colgate announced last December that it would close about one-third of its worldwide plants and cut up to 4,500 jobs as part of a four-year restructuring plan that executives hoped would save the company as much as $300 million each year.

The Clarksville plant makes about 95 percent of the company's U.S. toothpaste production, Edwards said.

Which low-wage country do you think will get these jobs? When are American workers going to get their brains back and start voting for politicians to put in laws about American products being manufactured in AMerica?

1. Republicans will celebrate this news
because it will lower the price as they shop for toothpaste at Walmart. Then they will find that they can't pay the price because their family has lost any hope of good paying jobs. Maybe reality will set in that W is a globalist king who could care less about the average American worker. He and his has enough for them to prosper for all time, and the hell with the rest of us.

5. Who needs toothpaste?
It's just baking soda with flavoring. A box of baking soda lasts five times as long at 1/4 the cost. I won't support an economy that doesn't support me.

I'll trade my electronics skills to help those that need to cut costs to survive.

6. Colgate recently announced the closing of a plant
in Mexico that made Irish Spring bar soap and moved production to the Cambridge, Ohio facility. I wonder if the plant in Mexico was too old to update or too far out on the logistics limb to justify keeping it open. It surely couldn't have been wages.
