South Korea Wants Talks to Regain Wartime Control of Its Military From US

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) - South Korea has proposed talks to take back wartime control of its military from the United States, the president's office said Wednesday.

South Korea transferred control of its forces to the U.S.-led U.N. command in 1950 that helped the country repel invading communists from the North during the Korean War.

The conflict ended in a 1953 truce, but control over the South's forces remained with an American general as chief of the U.N. command, or the South Korea-U.S. Combined Forces Command.

In 1994, South Korea regained peacetime control of its military, but the chief of U.S. forces in South Korea is still able to take control during wartime.

1. I wonder why...
Is it solely because they are a sovereign nation and want independence? Is it because we have a tendency to screw things up when we go to war? Is it because they have some unknown plans to do something? Or is it perhaps more than one of the above. The timing is interesting to me.

2. How can we spread freedom, if all these silly countries want control
of their own militaries? Don't they know we need dictatorial power over everthing they do, in order to make them free? SHEESH!

4. Right. And before you know it,
Louisiana will want control over their own national guard!

Can't have that, CAN WE?
