2. Try "Nature's Miracle".
It's an enzyme product you can get at pet stores, and there are some other similar ones. I've had good luck with it.

3. Enzymes
There's some kind of stuff in a bottle (pet section) that will neutralize it. I've used it successfully.

5. Rent a heavy duty carpet cleaner from the supermarket or hardware store,
the big, square tank kind.

Now, this is THE most important part:

Do NOT USE THE CARPET CLEANING SOLUTION THEY TRY TO SELL YOU.

do NOT USE carpet cleaning solution AT ALL.

Use Mr. Clean or its comparable. Use about one capful per tank.

Definitely test a corner first, Mr. Clean IS tough stuff, but, if this is a regular rug, you should be fine.

If it's a fine woolen or silk hand woven, priceless heirloom antique, etc., have it professionally cleaned.

Mr. Clean will remove all the odors and won't leave behind that wierd stuff that absorbes the oils and dirt.

This also works on your standard wall to wall carpet. It leaves the room fresh smelling, the rug really gets clean and the results couldn't be better.

The cleaners and odor removers and crap they try to sell you are worthless.

I have cleaned my rugs this way for years without a problem. It removes animal stains, kid stains and cooking/food stains, and it doesn't ruin your rugs.
