Probe widens in NO beating..anyone know about this?

Maybe someone's already posted on this. I saw on CNN this morning that the probe into the recent beating caught on video tape in New Orleans has been widened. They didn't talk about it long, but the story mentioned that federal officers (either FBI or CIA) were present and watching the beating. CNN also said that there was some incident with Immigration Officials right around the same area & time?

Is there a thread for this already? Anyone have the facts?

1. Check NO's TV stations. I saw a report this morning while watching.
The agents say they did not see the beating.

Just a bit in a larger article...

http://www.cnn.com/2005/LAW/10/11/taped.beatings/index.html

"A second investigation related to the incident was opened by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, which said Tuesday it is investigating whether one of its agents manhandled two witnesses to the beating."

The other probe
In the customs agency incident under investigation, the two witnesses to the beating incident, Calvin Briles and Mike Monaghan, said they were handcuffed, manhandled and shoved around by a man in a U.S. Customs vest. Both men are relief workers and students at the University of South Florida.

Briles described to the Bradenton, Florida Herald how he was thrown against a car with his face pressed against its hood after saying, "I want to tell somebody" about the beating.

Both men said they were handcuffed while authorities checked to see if there were outstanding warrants against them.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents helped with crowd control after the beating incident. ICE spokesman Marc Raimondi stressed that there is no allegation linking the customs agent to the beating itself.

3. on the news last night
Edited on Wed Oct-12-05 08:45 AM by SheepyMcSheepster
they reported that two of four seen subduing/beating the man were off duty FBI.
so it is a federal problem now.

the story goes like this: off duty FBI were hanging out and happened to see a struggle so they stepped in to help law enforcement.

as best i can tell the FBI weren't the ones doing punching etc.

4. WWL-TV had this story on their website yesterday
http://www.wwltv.com/local/stories/WWL101105witness.e474e5ad.html

BRADENTON, Fla. (AP) -- Two hurricane relief workers from Manatee County, Florida, say they witnessed the beating of a man on Bourbon Street in New Orleans that's been all over television news programs for the last couple days.

And they say one of them was manhandled as well.

Calvin Briles, a consultant for the Volunteer Center of Manatee County, says when law enforcement officers tried to get him and other passers-by out of the area, Briles said that he would tell somebody about what was going on.

Briles says that's when a man in a U.S. Customs vest grabbed him and threw him against a car, pressed his head against the hood and told Briles it was none of his business.
