2. Why does Apple stock dive...
every time they do new product announcements? It's off about 3.5% right now!

I swear it is SUCH a predictable phenomenon that you could probably build a small fortune just on that.

23. Is this a stolen one or what?
Chinese? I mean, looks valid enough, the Chinese says what I'd expect it to, as does the iPod itself, but I find it interesting. I was pretty sure there weren't any Apple stores in China. An unscrupulous Japanese worker sending it to a Chinese friend? A Chinese-American unscrupulous Apple employee? So many questions.

Where is the (legal) content for a video iPod? Also, aren't they kinda "cannibalizing" the sales for their new iPod Nano?

I really thought they would annouce a new set of notebooks today, and that the Video iPod rumors were just that.

But the quality is not the greatest. It's not HD and I can get better quality download using a torrent. Obviously, though, torrents aren't as reliable. So I'm up in the air. Hopefully they'll get an even better selection soon.

15. iPod nano is a radically different size.
The video iPods are 20 and 60 GB; the nano is 2 and 4 GB.

The video will be your own or certain videos bought through
the iTunes music store and containing DRM (Digital Rights
Management).

Plus, you know what they say "If you don't eat your own lunch,
someone else will eat it for you!". In other words, don't fear
canabalizing your own product line.

22. And this is my point
You don't need to worry about there being a legal path to a library full of MP3s - all you need to do is rip your CDs to your computer. There is no such legal path with video, and while the iTunes video store (which I'll admit - I didn't know anything about) is a step in the right direction, there is no legal way to rip DVDs to CD, nor is there a legal way before the video store to have a library of TV shows or movies.

I guess my point is that I think Apple is overestimating the market for this, as I don't really see this as necessary.

16. That would be
television shows and music videos that will be sold through the iTMS. And this isn't in the same product category as the iPod Nano. That's their midrange product, this is the highest-end. Presumably all iPods will be sold like this within 15 months, just as the iPod and iPod Photo lines merged.

24. I understand the mid-level vs. high-end distinction
What I'm saying is that the timing seems odd. They're releasing a new product in a product line right in the middle of a huge promotional push for a current item. It makes it look like they're either not doing as well as they hoped or they're predicting a big dropoff.

26. Well, they literally cannot meet demand for the Nano, so I don't think
that's it. Rather, I see this as a continuation of the slowly-accelerating pace of iPod releases. I think they're honestly trying to drown their competition with hype, to solidify the Apple "cutting edge" reputation. About the time Creative and SanDisk start to catch their breath, Apple will either increase storage, slash prices, or both. And then will release a new product line a few months afterwards.

This has a very narrow market it's aimed for--early adopters and the highly tech-savvy. And that's okay. Remember, the iPod photo also appeared that way too—virtually useless unles you were a tech-head who had to have everything. I mean, who needs photos in their music player? Nobody, really. But it still kept their edge in the Sharper-Image market, and photos now come standard, just as video will soon. This is what Apple does with introductions of features--first have it be ridiculously expensive, who-would-buy-this-useless-thing, then drop price, then make standard. Did it with the first iPod (500 bucks for a glorified CD player?), the Mini (who would pay that much for that little storage?), the Photo (who would pay for pictures on a music device?) and now the Video.

I use mine when I go out in the field to dump all of my digital photos from my card. Then I sync with my laptop for a backup. I can walk around with thousands of photos and I can run presentations directly from the iPod. That's pretty brilliant for my world. The video iPod just increases my possibilities. mmmm........techy!

will still be purchased along with this new ipod, a lot of people have more then one ipod, a shuffle and a regular and now a nano and a video ipod. I'm sure new notebooks will come out, a new imac also came out today so the notebooks won't be far behind but then again i am totaaly biased, my husband works for Apple and they've been putting food on our family for almost 6 years now and they have been a great company to work at.

61. Thats the way I like it, keep under 10% market share and above 5.
I do not want everyone on macs for a variety of reasons.

I love my new Imac G5 to pieces... though there does seem to be two tiny teeny clusters of about 5 or 6 pixels that have grayed on my LCD.

Now I'm wondering if I should wait another couple of months and take it in and see if I can just plop down some more cash and get the new one?? Do you know if thats possible, do they do deals like that? Its an obvious factory defect and I bought mine straight off the Apple site.

I also owned a first gen iMac bondi blue, was actually one of the last ones they made of the first series before they fixed the slot loader. Ran bad ass all the wya up until last year when it just couldn't handle the workload anymore. Im keeping it forever the damn thing single handledy changed product design forever. Remember all computers were beige or black back then?

Edited on Wed Oct-12-05 02:07 PM by Atman
They don't fall apart (or get thrown across the room) the way cheap peecees so often do. Their market has trouble expanding because of all the people who won't switch due to libraries of old WinX software. On the other hand, there are the people like me, who own rugged old iMacs that do everything, and therefore can't justify the expense of an upgrade. I mean, I'm using a crappy old iMac DV400 (that means it is a 400mhz G3, for you non-Applets). I've upgraded the HD to an 80gb internal, I've got 758mb of ram in it, it's got a Firewire CD burner, DVD, and it's running the latest version of OSX (10.4.2). I'd love to buy a new computer, but I can't justify it. I run Photoshop, Illustrator, GoLive, iTunes, Mail, FireFox, Dashboard, and more all at the same time -- in fact, they're all running as I type this. When I have to decide whether to spend $800 or more on stuff like HEATING OIL or a new computer, a new computer is a tough sell.

If Apple just made them fall apart like peecees do, or required me to upgrade the computer in order to run the OS they've foisted upon me, then I'd have to, I suppose. For now...I'll "cope" with my trusty ol' iMac. And perhaps spend the money on another iPod, instead!

Running my 6-year-old iMacs (333 and 350) simply because I cannot justify the price of newer ones. I would also have to buy new software for OS-10 since I'm still using 8.6 on one and 9.1 on the other. Might buy a used eMac later on if I can find one in the $400 range.

I got FUCKED on a Performa, back in 1996. OK -- so, maybe I'm clueless, and it was a stupid purchase -- but that thing was a piece of shit. I have a Gateway that's been running, top notch, for about five years (a 400mhz), and I inherited it, used. I wouldn't purchase a Dell if you threatened my life, though -- and my bf gets a phat discount on them, through his work.
