Is having a moderate, (Ed Schultz) on AFR better than nothing?
Edited on Wed Oct-12-05 03:13 PM by LaPera
1) Schultz just got his 100th station...Is that the criteria Armed Forces Radio (AFR) demands, that one has to be on at least 100 radio stations?

2) I've always questioned Schultz', true dedication and his self-servicing. Does he pretend to be a liberal because there's big money in it, and/or because the conservative radio talk show market is all filled up? Does Schultz really have passion for liberal, and progressive ideology?

3) Is it better to have somebody, ANYBODY, to offset, compete and offer a different point of view... with Rush Limbaugh being the only radio talk show on AFR right now...

4) Would it be better to have true liberals, sharp passionate liberals, like Thom Hartmann, Randi Rhodes and Mike Malloy, to really expose the huge ideological differences, with hard hitting facts, and magnifying the lies that the pigman Limbaugh spews out each day to the troops?

Ed Schultz coming to Armed Forces Radio

Ed announced on his show yesterday that his show will be on Armed Forces Radio (AFRTS) starting October 17.

1. I find it disturbing...
That on (from what I can tell) most of the AAR affiliates don't carry the full AAR lineup. Not even close. I was hard pressed to find even one (other than WLIB).

I don't like Ed Schultz but he's better than nothing. Of course that's like saying having a choice between eating dirt or dead bugs is better than nothing. None of them are very appealing.

He loses me when he talks about sports and hunting, but I'm with him on truth-telling.

6. I don't see Randi or Malloy
appealing to many in the military.

They are great red meat for those of us already on the left, but there are many in the military that are looking for an alternative, but aren't already there. Also, I've heard Malloy make statements which could easily offend and turn off military listeners. Randi is somewhat shrill.

Shultz isn't perfect and at times I am annoyed by his "I can see it both ways" nonsense, but he can appeal to moderates and conservatives which are fed up with what's going on. He makes the distinction clear as well and tells listeners why Dems are better on defense related issues.

7. I don't know why people get down on Schultz.
The fact that he doesn't fall in lock step with every other progressive talker is what I admire about him.

Not to put Rhodes, Malloy, and Hartmann down. I enjoy listening to them too.

Although sometimes I would rather listen to someone who forms their own opinions and is not afraid to take a stance somewhat different than what is expected every once in a while, than listen to someone who just parrots the same thing everyone else is saying.

As much as I disagree with Pat Buchanan, I admire him for not following the GOP talking points that every other conservative speaker out there is spouting off.

9. I like Big Ed!! He's no bullshit.
I like a personality on air that doesn't have to toe any particular party line. He calls bullshit when appropriate. That's how I am, and that's what I like in people. Some people are just total robots, afraid to speak the truth if it hurts their "side". He reminds me of Ken Schram on KOMOTV in Seattle. You can tell he's fairly liberal, but he doesn't hesitate to call people out on either side of the aisle if they're doing something wrong.

I'm a pretty liberal person, but can probably be best described as liberal leaning moderate. Big Ed is the one I find myself listening to the longest, and it's personalities like his that will win us back voters who are moderates. The screaming Randis are preaching to the choir and turn some people off of the message entirely. I listen to her in short doses...

10. Personally I like Big Ed, in fact....
Edited on Wed Oct-12-05 05:38 PM by KerryOn
I like him a lot more then Randy, and I dont like to listen to Malloy at all.

Ed does not follow all the way to the left, which is what I like about him. Ed has his own opinion. If he followed to the far left line of thought 100%, then I would say it was a show. But since he has his own opinion that tells me that he is always speaking from his heart, and that it is NOT a show. Face it, all of us have our own opinions even her at DU.

So I view him just the opposite as you have implied. Ed's the real deal in my opinion.

11. Unlike many, Ed will be LISTENABLE for AFR
Seriously, can you even imagine AFR trying to host the Malloy show?

Plus, he represents a mainstream rural America that is often neglected by extremists on all sides. By providing a moderate critique of the bush administration, he shows the listeners that "bush bashing" is not an extremist activity.

12. Jeez, what's the down side? I don't get all the Ed Schultz bashing here
I'm way to the left of Big Ed, but for crying out loud, how can anyone question whether he's good for Armed Forces radio?

Limbaugh has been lying to the military for almost a GENERATION. Now someone to the left of center is on, and you guys want to kick him to the curb because he ISN"T LIBERAL ENOUGH?

Unbelievable.

Lift foot. Ready, fire, aim.
