Not only has the American Press found some courage, they've remembered
how to write a snappy sentence, just like in the old days!

Imagine, ABC News uncorking a phrase like: "He did allow himself to be shown hammering purposefully, with a jejune combination of cowboy swagger and yuppie self-consciousness."

I love it! (I'm not being sarcastic here. It's about time we got some peppy writing out of news people.)

2. News isn't supposed to be 'peppy'
It's supposed to be factual.

3. Nothing wrong with presenting the
facts in a "peppy" way.

6. Damn right. Besides, what is not factual in that sentence?
I don't see a word that's untrue.

21. Well, let's see...
He did allow himself to be shown hammering purposefully, with a jejune combination of cowboy swagger and yuppie self-consciousness.

•"Jejune" has two distinct definitions: "dull" and "immature." Which was meant? And how many Mer'kins even know what "jejune" means?

•"Cowboy swagger" and "yuppie self-consciousness" are subjective commentary, not fact. As is the entire sentence.

This is not good newswriting.

22. Pick, pick, pick. I still like it. Shows some spirit.
Strip news writing of all flavor and it gets to be a damn dull diet.

4. A piece of news writing can be factual

and still have a kick in its step. Many ink-stained wretches in the newsrooms of old who banged out hard news on the Underwood did so with a flair for the well-turned phrase.

14. That'll be the day
Cue the band. And thanks for the laugh. Didn't Raygun end that with his blistering critique on "facts being stupid things." Hey-that sums up the other side's philosophy in a neato burrito.

7. Elucidate, if you'd be so kind. I don't get your reference and would
appreciate it if you'd tell me where that phrase about "the aspen" came from.

I don't keep up with everything that's going on, and rely on fellow DUers to fill the gaps for me.

If you wouldn't mind taking the time to educate me on this one...

11. So what does that have to do with "the press getting permission"
to tear strips off bushyboy and them?

I don't get it.

17. libby sent miller this letter...
Edited on Thu Oct-13-05 09:23 PM by ret5hd

they are both in the aspen institute. the institute had a meeting sometime before this letter. even novak was present at this meeting. but not judy. she was in jail.

it is my (and many others) contention that this letter was in "code" giving her permission to "tell all", as it had already been decided by the elite (and this permission discussed at the meeting) that the usefullness of this admin was gone...so let 'er rip!

20. Aha. Thank you; that does make sense as a theory.
That's gotta be it. Otherwise, that letter is no more than an utterly incomprehensible melange of rambling gobbledygook.

It's just an extraordinarily strange and baffling document unless there's something underlying it, yes?

10. Maybe the people who REALLY run things
have decided * should be tossed overboard. Faux and Tweety and Whorah O'Donnell are really the only ones who are still covering for him.

15. Ding da frigging ding ding
The winner! The memo is OUT folks. It's okay to bash Bush, and I wish I weren't so cynical but someone higher up is always pulling the strings. But don't mind me, I'm a gnostic.

Courage is when it's not popular to go after a "popular" president. Courage is going after the truth when everyone else is ignoring it. This is bandwagon.

13. It was written about bushyboy's silly posturing down South, hammering
a nail or two into a piece of plywood, like The God King Is Personally Rebuilding Mississippi, Louisiana, and Alabama, All With His Own Hands.

Apparently, he really flubbed the photo-op, exposing himself yet again for the buffoon he has always been.

But this time more people noticed.

12. Have the companies that own the media
realised that if Bush is allowed to bring the whole country down they'll go down as well? It's very interesting to me how suddenly the press has become somewhat functional again.

Edited on Thu Oct-13-05 09:30 PM by spenbax
right now, I think Cheney flipped the switch to try and save his own ass.
On edit, why would Cheney buy a mansion now if he thought he wasn't going to be around for the next 3 yrs? They're starting to eat each other just like we knew they would.

"He did allow himself to be shown hammering purposefully, with a jejune combination of cowboy swagger and yuppie self-consciousness."

Ah, the return of snarky journalism. About time, too.

You could tell Bush has never held a hammer in his hand in his life. They probably had a session where he practiced for a while.

Today the press was BACK. They weren't acting like an abused child, afraid to speak, smiling uncomfortably and hoping daddy Bush favors them today.
