The company that owns a Broward County racetrack that wants to install slot machines spent $50,000 to fly four Republican lawmakers to Canada this summer in a trip even the legislators' party questioned.
Toronto-based Magna Entertainment Corp., which owns Gulfstream Park, reported the cost of the two-day July trip as a contribution to the Republican Party of Florida. The party said on Thursday it is reimbursing Magna for the cost of the trip.
Former Senate President Jim King was among the four lawmakers who took the trip. The lawmakers said their goal was to raise money for the party and to encourage the company to invest in Florida.
Joining King on the trip were Sen. Dennis Jones of St. Petersburg, Sen. Michael Bennett of Bradenton, and Rep. Frank Farkas of St. Petersburg. Jones chairs the Senate Regulated Industries Committee, which regulates Florida's pari-mutuel facilities. King is on the committee.
