The morning portion of the program includes a dedication to the victims and survivors of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, speeches on the goals of the movement, identification of areas of development in the black community, and the presentation of a covenant pledge of action.

1. on a related note...Cornel West just ROCKS
I love that guy! I swear, if our democratic leaders could embrace and communicate the progressive vision of great men like Professor West, we'd be in the White House right now.

3. Was Katrina the black 9/11?
I just had this thought that maybe Katrina had the same shocking impact on the African American community that 9/11 had on Americans in general. You know, a sort of big event after which things can't be the same again?

4. After Katrina things cannot be the same again -
Yep. Mostly, I think, tragically sad and true: All Katrina did was force people to look at what had been there all along, just beneath the surface. Many African Americans had convinced themselves that the nightmare of their past was over - the playing field was even. My workplace neighbor who listens to Rush and voted for * is one of them. He has been shaken since Katrina, but hasn't yet made a full turn. Justice only lasts for as long as people keep their eyes peeled for injustice and deal with each insult as it comes along.
