LUCKY Iraqi women! STONING FOR ADULTERY coming soon!
You didn't have it under Hussein, but THANKS TO BUSH, you will have it now!

RAH RAH RAH!

La Repubblica interview, Feb. 8, 2005, with Sayid Nasr al-Yasari, Sistani's spokesman;

La Repubblica: "Putting it in a nutshell, there will be no more stoning of adulterous women, is that it?"

Al-Yasari: "Well, it depends. In the case of married women whom eye witnesses can accuse of betraying their husbands, the punishment can only be that. But in any event there will be very few exemplary sentences, and they will always be issued after a fair trial."

Welcome to "liberated" Iraq – that’s what our troops are dying for, and that’s what you’re paying for. It’s medievalism with a "democratic" face.

RAH RAH RAH! Now you Iraqis get out and VOTE for that "constitution" you've never read and bring the joys of stoning adulerous women to Iraq! RAH RAH RAH!

1. Pathetic.
Well, nobody can say we've shoved OUR democracy down their throats. We tried, but they wouldn't swallow!

Time to take our toys and quietly leave.

13. Ya mean like Afghanistan is now a "success" and women are "free"?
Did Condi and Karen and the sofa et al ever mention that law Afghanistan enacted in 2004? The one where it's a felony -perhaps death penalty- for "insulting in any manner" the Koran? Did they mention yet that women in Afghanistan are now WORSE OFF -as are the women in Iraq- than before bush's bullshit wars of aggression?

Hmmm. Nope, don't think they mentioned any of this. Could be why the women in the ME dunned Hughes out.

14. We're fighting for their FREEEEEEDUM

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/10/13/AR2005101300754.html?nav=rss_nation/special

BUSH: And the philosophy is so opposite of ours. It is the exact opposite of what America stands for. We stand for religious freedom and freedom to speak and womens' rights and capacity for people to realize their dreams.

They stand for a vision that doesn't believe in freedom; that if you don't agree with their narrow point of view that you're subject to reprisal.

And so I want to thank you for being a part of this global war.

And Iraq is a part of the war because the enemy understands that a free Iraq will be a blow to their vision and their strategy of spreading dominance throughout the broader Middle East.

44. Bush said that? The second paragraph you have
"They stand for a vision that doesn't believe in freedom; that if you don't agree with their narrow point of view that you're subject to reprisal."

That arrogant motherfucker.

The pure audacity of him, to make that claim.

How come whenever he tries to get on a moral high horse and condemn others, he always ends up describing himself?

WTF?

Do they do it deliberately, for amusement, because they know they can get away with it?

Are they so arrogant that they can't even step back and see their own flaws?

Or, are they just so oblivious that it just goes right over their heads?

30. And then, we all know that once the "liberated" Iraqis will start
stoning tens, then hundreds, then thousands of innocent women...

The PNAC criminals will then say something close to: "We (uh-umm), we have to stay in Iraq and torture, rape (kids!), and kill and maim thousands of innocents because we "must" impose "our" way over them until the day they'll stop stoning their innocent women" (the same crimes they were forbidden to commit under the previous "dictatorship")...

How more "predictable" can these robber-barons ever get?? :grr:

31. if we "succeed", they lose ...
we're told the US is fighting for democracy and stability ... would you want things to become stable if that stability empowered a government and a constitution that allowed the government to have you stoned ???

democracy and stability are to be valued for sure ... but a democracy built on theocratic values imposed on those who are not "believers" is a tyranny the US, and certainly our elected Democrats, should NOT be supporting ...

if current Democratic thinking were to evolve to its "successful" conclusion, the rights of the Sunnis and especially Sunni women would be lost to a tyranny of the majority ... Democrats who continue to vote for more war funding are condemning the Sunni people to a life void of hope ...

it's crazy and i will never vote for the Democrats who continue to support this madness ...

great post, LynnTheDem !!

34. They use only small stones for stoning women to death now in Afghanistan
...since the the USA invaded and occupied that country. That is quite an improvement over the Taliban.

http://www.nypress.com/15/3/news&columns/wildjustice.cfm

<snip>Shortly before the turn of the year Justice Minister Karimi declared Afghanistan’s new government would still impose Sharia Islamic law on its people, but with less harshness. The details were fleshed out by Judge Ahamat Ullha Zarif, who told the French news agency Agence France Presse that public executions and amputations will continue, but there will be changes: "For example, the Taliban used to hang the victim’s body in public for four days. We will only hang the body for a short time, say 15 minutes." Very Warholian.

Kabul’s sports stadium, financed by the International Monetary Fund, was where the Taliban used to carry out public executions and amputations every Friday. No longer. "The stadium is for sports. We will find a new place for public executions," says Judge Zarif.

Judge Zarif makes it clear that the ultimate penalty will remain in force for adulterers, both male and female. They would still be stoned to death, Zarif told the French news agency, "but we will use only small stones."

Now there’s progress!

Amina's uncle, Mohammad Azim, stands near the clearing where he said the villagers of Gazon buried his niece up to her waist and stoned her to death - THE WASHINGTON POST

<snip>Within an hour, the entire village would learn that the 25-year-old married woman had been discovered in a darkened hut nearby with her lover.

Within two days, Amina would be dead - killed by her fellow villagers on April 20 after the men of the community ruled that she had violated Islamic law by having an affair with a neighbor.

Amina's fate highlights the magnitude of the challenge faced by Afghanistan's central government as it attempts to extend the rule of modern law and democratic processes beyond the nation's capital, Kabul, more than three years after the defeat of the repressive and fundamentalist Islamic Taliban regime.

But the attention that Amina's killing has attracted in a forgotten corner of Badakhshan province also tells the story of a region in flux - caught between centuries of conservative tradition and the hopes of a nascent modern state.
