to shut down a great american city.

What are we telling the world?

What are we teaching the terra-ists? See how easy it is to succeed, you don't even have to have bombs!. Empty wrapped boxes, with a note, "Thes is a bumb - due not tooch!"

what are we telling our children? that we are scared of our own shadows?

THIS IS ALL BULLSHIT. And, if real people wished us harm here, we would have been seeing much more of this.

It is SOP... now the media there... that is the over reaction.

Edited on Fri Oct-14-05 01:52 PM by nadinbrzezinski
seem to be bogus or are bogus (and why the press should just not cover them)... it is that there are times you do find a real bomb.

I have seen it, a computer blown to bits after it was abandoned (the insurance was not gonna cover that one either), Heck my husband while in the navy saw an admiral's brief case go up in smithereens when he ahem forgot it for ten minutes ok.

Were either of these two items bombs? No... but procedure was followed because sometimes, rarely, they are.

I don't take the threat of terror as a joke, but I have been there done that...

And you know what? Most americans haven't, and when it comes to the bushies well they have abused it to the point that you are a cynic. Even if they were not around the cops would still respond, but if the press did not breathlessly cover each one of them... you'd never know about it.

Oh and a car in front of me that was full of C-4... yep, if it had gone off, I would have never even felt it

72. I can't take this seriously. There's been too many Cry Wolfs.
This will only make people more afraid... afraid of what? People's lunch bags? This whole business plays into the neocon agenda to make people afraid.

What we are going to find out is that they brought a huge freeway to a halt, a mass transit system closed down, and disrupted a huge number of people's lives at a non-trivial cost for somebody's lunch box. I'll bet any amount of money that they have no coincidental threat, no reason to suspect this thing, independent of the fact that it is sitting on the platform.

The chance that this is a dangerous thing is immeasurable. By taking all this unnecessary action and disrupting a very large city, it makes people more cynical of these situations so when there is a credible threat in conjunction with a discovery like this, people will ignore it and then people will die who didn't have to.

This is ridiculous. They should have just tossed it away and been done with it.

75. People will ignore it until somebody dies
speak to a british citizen at and what he remembers from the troubles, or speak to an Israeli, perchance an Italian with the Moro Red brigade

the problem with the Bush administration chiefly, is that they have lost credibilty... but they started loosing it when they failed to educate civilians.

You see there was this teachable moment after 9.11 (and yes I am assuming the risk of external and INTERNAL terror is with us, chiefly internal) where people should have been told, what to look for... and that never happened

Instead what has happened is the use of terror to terrorize a population, state terror.

What you just saw on MSNBC happens all the time... hell yesterday they closed two blocks of Lemon Grove because they found what looked like a pipe bomb. Apart of the very local news, where this was significant... mostly happened in the middle of the day and on a main road, it never made it to the state level, let alone national.

Today's case warranted LA wide news, why? They had to shut out the freeway. It did not warrant national coverage... and the LA, well if they took care of it, as they did, fairly fast, we may even debate city coverage. It took the SD Sheriffs dept a tad longer yesterday.

That said, incidents like this happen a dime a dozen every day across the US.. they do... and they will continue to happen. They happen inside military bases all the time, as well as airports. Every once in a while... that car... or some years back they actually found a real doozey of a pipe bomb over here, they are real...

Oh and they also failed to educate you on other delivery means such as the USPS... I know what I am looking for... but again I have received the training.

As I said, don't criticize the cops. they did EXACTLY what they have to do every damn time... and they take it seriously every damn time, because you never know when that crank will go boom. Blame the media, blame the bushies, don't blame the cops.

81. But this isn't Britain. It's certainly not Israel.
Edited on Fri Oct-14-05 02:47 PM by longship
The London bombings were presaged by threats, and indications of threats. There were collaborative indications. Just like for 9-11, there was information that would have lead people to believe an event was imminent. I would bet my bottom dollar that this was not the situation in this case.

If we bring a city to a halt every time somebody leaves a backpack on a train platform we have let the terrorists win the war.

To make people afraid of everything is to let the terrorists win the war.

Giving significant national media coverage for every insignificant paranoia is to let the terrorists win the war.

I will not let these assholes--both in the administration and our enemies (how are they different these days?)--scare me. I refuse to be afraid of backpacks, suitcases, briefcases, or Barbie Doll lunch boxes. This whole thing is ridiculous. And people's paranoia about it plays directly into the terrorist's most heartful desires.

There is nothing to fear but fear itself.--FDR.

80. You know, one of these days they're going to have to ratchet up...
...and plant a real bomb. I bet they can get some British special forces, maybe dressed as muslims...

Wow, that's just crazy talk. They wouldn't do anything like that. That'd be, like, unAmerican. Like deliberately breaking the law by funding money to groups congress said you couldn't fund from drug dealers. I mean, that kind of thing might kill Americans. They'd never stoop to something like that.

No one would ever do anything like that.

I'm such a wacky, wild-eyed conspiracy theorist.

87. I haven't changed habits since Sept 12, 2001

After the first attack I did as many people did. I keep some cash in a secure place in the house I keep water bottled, and a supply of canned goods. I canceled a trip at that time and have greatly cut back on all travel since. I did not celebrate Christmas except as a spiritual event. There isn't anything for me to do when someone on TV says that people are supposed to jump, I've already done it.

I still keep the modest emergency supplies, I have not gone back to spending money as I did before Sept. 11. I'm not as concerned about massive organized attacks as I am about individuals doing things. It really doesn't take much for one person who hates the US to kill many people, it's only hard if they want to live through it. And harder if they don't want to get caught. But either way, regardless of what is or is not credible what is or is not politics, you just prepare once make sure it's all there from time to time and hope you are not where someone decides to blow themselves up.

91. You know the real irony of this,
terrorists and radical muslims who are planning something in the future have to be laughing their asses off. They don't even have to do anything anymore.

Bush has got America so scared with terror alerts, we spend millions to fend off terror which was never there. It's like vitamins, one a day.
