Check out these insane New Orleans real estate prices!
Looks like the Big Easy has finally caught up with the rest of the country -- and not in a good way.

http://www.nola.com/rentals/index.ssf

Try to find, in Orleans Parish, above Canal, anything much below $1000. A thousand bucks! In my day, admittedly 15 years ago, I could just walk down the street -- S. Carrollton Ave., a rather good street, complete with streetcar -- and within a few blocks just run across a 2-bedroom for $375!

If this doesn't abate soon, after other parts of the city reopen, this alone could help fuel the dire predictions of only the rich (and white) coming back. :scared:

1. Rental market is crazy, but home sales prices are normal
tons of people are looking for rentals while their homes are being rebuilt. Its only a temporary bubble.

3. $1000 bucks for a nice place is cheap were I come from.
I own now, but the last place I rented was $2000 month and it was just a 3 bedroom ranch with no view and 70s decor (avocado appliances & harvest gold shag rug --ugh!)

4. Actually,
My daughter and SO were paying $1400 for an apartment off of Magazine. They really loved it. Since my daughter has previously lived in New York, she thought the price was great.

Their area of NO was in good shape. They lost nothing, except their lives in a beloved city. They have moved from NO because they want to have a family and are worried about the pollution, air quality, etc. They know how the EPA lies.

Their escape from NO the night before the hurricane was enough of a scare that they also just did not want to live in a hurricane zone anymore. They are an upwardly mobile couple and I'm afraid that a lot of people similar will not return to NO. This saddens me so much. All of us here in So. Louisiana adore NO. We want it to prosper again, but not at the expense of the poor. They are the soul of this city and it is their home. The working poor need to be paid more and respected more. Ah, shit, if only!!
