What are the Fundamental Must-Haves for a Democratic Nation?
Edited on Fri Oct-14-05 05:15 PM by ck4829
A War Supporter said a while back that Iraq could still be a Democracy and restrict the right of women to vote.

No way. That's not in MY list of Fundamental Must-Haves for a Democratic Nation.

My list.

1. Women MUST have the Right to vote and be as equal to a man in the government's eyes
2. The nation must not permit slavery in any way
3. The nation must support Equal Rights regardless of what a person is or what a person believes in
4. The nation must not be linked to war crimes or crimes against humanity
5. The nation can not have castes or places of society where people are locked in for life

What's your list?

Well, looking at your list I would note that:

1. The US didn't permit women to vote until the early 1900s

2. We permitted slavery here for quite some time.

3. The last time I looked the Equal Rights Amendment hadn't passed.

4. Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo Torture...My Lai...Vietnamese Free Fire Zones...Hiroshima and Nagasaki

5. I dunno about castes or places where people are locked in...do Jim Crow laws and Indian reservations qualify?

Haven't the last 10 years of almost complete GOP control of the corporate media taught us anything?

Every issue comes down to awareness and without a strong media there is no opportunity for widespread awareness.

14. I read that "Fundamentalist must haves...
for a Democratic Nation" - and I was getting ready to tell you they don't WANT a Democratic Nation - but a Theocratic one.

I opened up to "Women MUST have the Right to vote" and figured I missed sumpin' somewhere! lol.....

I like your list.

Empowerment for all individuals.
Equality of education and opportunity for all individuals.
Zero tolerance for discrimination and hate crimes.
