I'm reading "No Logo" and watched "The Corporation" yesterday.
Don't let me near a mall. I can ignore billboards advertising bullshit "Brands" and their plundering of the World's resourses however the mall with all of that shit (Literally crap we don't NEED but buy because we're all brainwashed "Consumers" and not Citizens anymore) in one place might make me snap.

When will enough exploitation be enough????

1. Have you read any of the books that
counter Klein's arguments? There's nothing wrong with reading polemics like Klein, but I might suggest tempering it with other viewpoints also...

5. I haven't finished No Logo yet why would I have read a rebuttal?
That aside I've sort of lost my interest in rah rah corpo-globalism polemics so I doubt I will anyway:-)

7. There is much nuance
between Klein and the neo liberal cheerleaders, my point is before you commit yourself to a worldview like that of Klein's, you should also look fairly at other perspectives. Among others I would suggest Joe Stiglitz, Clyde Prestowitz, Jeff Sachs, and Paul Krugman (yes that Paul Krugman), they all have very different views on globalization that should all be considered before you come to such a definitive conclusion on a very complex phenomenon...

8. I've read plenty of Krugman and on this issue I disagree vehemontly...
Edited on Fri Oct-14-05 10:18 PM by JanMichael
...with him. In addition the Stiglitz that I've read on this matter does not impress me. So...

Thanks:-)

PS~ I should add that I love Paul's ideas about US institutions like SS and other Progressive concepts, just not his ideas about what makes them all possible on the International (Ie. Multi-National Corporation) scene. Also the two works that I cited contain concepts which are not new to me, no they amplify already strongly held principles, they simply present those ideas in a way that lays out all I see that's wrong with today's economies in a really tight package.

13. I was really impressed with both Krugman & Stiglitz. Plus all the
leaders (intellectual) of the less developed nations say they want trade and that Africa needs access to our food markets if it is to crawl out of mayhem.

Neocons paint it like trade has to be done one way. That is bullshit. Trade can include whatever norms you choose. Like allowing for national industries while a country tries to improve its credit situation. Like universal health care. Anything can be a norm.

3. Do you have a problem with LOW...
... blood pressure? Need to jack it up a taste?

Like to bang your head into a wall?

I read/watch those kinda things and I have to double up on my BP meds and watch a couple of taped "Daily Shows" to resume normal breathing.

I understand why people don't listen to/watch the world around them.... tooooo muuuuch information that make your head want to explode.

You are correct however that what the World is, and what it's becoming, can be almost too much...

14. A good follow on documentary is
"The Yes Men" -- bascially the guys from rTMark (Barbie Liberation Organization, gwbush.com, etc) who set up a spoof website http://www.gatt.org/ and get hired by mistake to give pro-Globalization talks. Instead they see how far out they can go (eg sending out human shit to feed the third world) before the audience twigs. As a documentary it's got flaws and it could have done with a more judicious editor, but it's still jolly good fun. And a bit of light relief is called for after "The Corporation".
