Just got back from seeing "Good Night and Good Luck"
Anyone else see it yet?

It was great -- so many parallels to what's going on today. I hope it's nominated for something -- it definitely deserves it. We need more people like Murrow these days -- we only have KO and a few others.

6. It's hard to take exception to this because it's historical
and, although it parallels some of the things going on today in some ways, it doesn't take aim at current public figures like MM does. For us around here, MM was great, but many people took offense to it.

9. Hi Sharon. I'd like to get the chance to see it this weekend.
Man could we use an Edward R. Murrow right about now. Maybe the movie will get many more people thinking about the fact that we have no one (except Keith, and his format doesn't really allow it)in television journalism willing to really take a stand and speak truth to power, no one.

Let me know what you think once you've seen it. We almost never go out on Friday night, but we have a late football game tomorrow and I really wanted to see it as soon as it opened, so I called Dave before I left work and told him I wanted to go tonight and we left as soon as I got home.

I rarely go out on weekends unless I have to
because I don't like contending w/traffic, parking, long lines, etc.
Seldom do I see a film in the theatre; if I think it's going to be visually stunning
and best seen on the big screen, I'll get myself to the theatre - or unless I need to
see it NOW (like Constant Gardiner, and this film).

44. Hey, lady!
I'm gonna try for this weekend. Looking forward to seeing it. I recommended this thread. First, because people should learn about Murrow if they don't know who he was. Secondly, because "I like youse".

While we're at it, let's all go watch Network again.

20. When Murrow was around there were only 3 networks
And in lots of towns only one or 2 stations. I lived near Binghamton New York, and its channel 12 was affiliated with ABC, NBC and CBS. How's that for choice!).

It's a different world out, er, up there.

28. yes
that is probably the main reason.

And, back then news was very serious with emotionless white men doing the news. It was a big deal when women first went on the news because some thought they wouldn't be dispassionate enough.

KO is completely different personality-wise than the anchors of old.

34. Definitely different, but the message is often comparable
Today's audiences need something less serious to keep there attention and KO provides it -- he can do serious when he has to, but can spice it up with some humor when appropriate.

27. Not so much his fault as the bifrucation of audience now.
In Murrow's time, there were fewer in the new medium and the medium was smaller.

Also, MSNBC doesn't promote itself as well as Faux and Corporate News Network. The power there is at 30 Rock and NOT in Secaucus, NJ.

Keith's as good for this era.

very smart use of events then, analogized to events now...such as fear mongering.

16. It got applause at the end when I saw it.
The guy on the line in the bathroom asked me if I liked it, I told him it should be playing in all of the theaters.

It was so wonderful I don't care if it looks like I have a brown nose.

It was Shakespeare.

I also saw Capote on the same day. Best day I've had in a long time.

Planning to take the day off work, since I need to be home damn early for the 400+ trick-or-treaters we get here...and since my 93-year-old mother sits in the dark until I get home that day. :(

My car needs an oil change....but that won't take too long. I can see the movie in Evanston. :D

Yes, re trick-or-treaters. People come with van-loads of kids from the gods know where and they come to our houses. EEk!!! It is two weeks from Monday...need to buy tons of candy. The good news is that I run out fairly early...turn out the downstairs lights and hide out on my pooter.

If you go early afternoon today I doubt you'll have a problem. It you try for the late afternoon showing, I would get there early for tickets. That's usually a very crowded time there with the older set. Tonight will also probably be crowded.
