Recommended. His books and this speech.

Drafted and served in Vietnam 1969-70

Writer for the Washington Post after Vietnam (74-75)

He gave great tips on writing, including “Watch your grammar, or you could wind up as President”

After reading a chapter “Ambush”, he said this chapter reminds him of the war in Iraq and the war in Afghanistan (“the one we’ve almost forgotten”)

“Art is a lie that makes you realize the truth”

“as students and as human beings, look out for the word Truth, especially if it’s capitalized”

Q & A

Knowing what you know now, would you have gone to Canada instead of going to Vietnam? “Yea”

Relative to soldiers and how they see war, what similarities do you see between Vietnam and Iraq?
“Both are Gorilla wars – you don’t know who you are shooting at, citizen or enemy? When you can’t tell you get frustrated, watching your friends die around you. You’d get sniped at from some village – step back and call in the gun ships. Everyone in the village would die. The citizen deaths in both wars are huge, and the double standard is beyond belief. They tell you about each soldier that dies, friendly’s deaths are never counted. The ignorance. They couldn’t spell Hanoi, they can’t spell Fallujah. How many people can find Afghanistan on a map? Colossal ignorance about the other country causes so many to die. The false claims leading to both wars. Tonkin bombing might never have happened at all, they say now. You don’t go to war with one reason, then change the reason in the middle of the war. The idea that we can decide who the bad guys are and attack them first, doesn’t that give them the right to do the same to us? double standards are eerily reminiscent of Vietnam."

48. Notes -
“Omeeden“ (phonetic – Google couldn’t find the correct spelling) American Indian for “walking sickness”

also referred to as Y pestis

The Black Death rivals a nuclear event (# of casualties)

1/3 of Europe died (25 million) in the 5 years it took to sweep the continent

Plague is a disease of rodents – humans are just collateral damage

possible theory – rodent population explosion after the ice age ended.

Originated somewhere between the Mongolian plain and Siberia.

extremely adaptive – like AIDS

transmitted by 37 different species of fleas

Pneumonic 95-100% death rate – transferred from human to human

Bubonic – 60% death rate

Merchant strangers had never experienced plague – they took it from Central Asia to Japan and Europe.

Ecological upheavals also cause the spread – famine etc. Displaced rodent migrations.

Tree ring study shows droughts correlate with outbreaks of plague in 540 AD and 1345 AD.

14th century medieval cities were filthy – even streets were named after human filth, or slaughter houses. Rats love filth.

Last major outbreak of plague was during the Vietnam War. War creates dead bodies, which attract rats.

Bummer – they cut it off before the Q&A because the previous show ran long. :(

Winston Groom recounts the year following America's entry into World War II in his latest book, "1942: The Year That Tried Men's Souls." The author describes the first half of the year as a disaster with more than 2,500 killed but explains that by the end of the year the marines had destroyed the Japanese paving the way for eventual triumph. This event was hosted by the Atlanta History Center in Georgia.

Winston Groom served in the Vietnam War as a lieutenant with the Fourth Infantry Division. He is the author of the Pulitzer Prize-nominated "Conversations with the Enemy," "A Storm in Flanders," "Shrouds of Glory," and "Forrest Gump."

Deep Water: The Epic Struggle over Dams, Displaced People, and the Environment

Jacques Leslie

In the 1990s, the World Commission on Dams was formed to examine the effects of large dams on their surrounding environments. Three of these commission members are the subject of Jacques Leslie's new book, "Deep Water: The Epic Struggle over Dams, Displaced People, and the Environment." In it, the author tells the story of commission members in Australia, Africa, and India, where large dams displace hundreds of thousands of people while generating massive amounts of energy at the same time. The author also addresses the political and social effects of dams, including globalization, environmental deterioration, and the risks associated with tampering with nature on a large scale.

Jacques Leslie is the author of The Mark: A War Correspondent's Memoir of Vietnam and Cambodia" and has written for New York Times Magazine, Washington Monthly, and Atlantic Monthly.

In Search of the Promised Land: A Slave Family in the Old South

John Hope Franklin & Loren Schweninger

"In Search of the Promised Land" tells the story of three generations of slaves in the 1800s and their respective experiences in the Antebellum United States. Authors John Hope Franklin and Loren Schweninger examine documents, maps, articles, and photographs in order to recreate the journeys taken by both newly-freed and runaway slaves in their quest to settle in lands without slavery. The authors also explore the ways in which these former slaves settled in northern California, Canada, and New England.

John Hope Franklin is the author of many books including "Runaway Slaves: Rebels on the Plantation." He has served as president of American Historical Association, Society for Historical Archaeology, and Phi Beta Kappa. He is currently a history professor Emeritus at Duke University. It Takes a Parent: How the Culture of Pushover Parenting is Hurting Our Kids

Betsy Hart

Betsy Hart argues that today's "parenting culture" is harmful to children. In her book, "It Takes a Parent," she explains that by listening to the advice of family experts, parents have stopped disciplining unacceptable behavior and have passed the responsibility of decision-making off to their children. Ms. Hart, a single mother of four children, asserts that this type of parenting encourages children to be selfish and prohibits them from growing into healthy adults. This event was hosted by the Clare Boothe Luce Policy Institute and took place in Washington, DC.

Betsy Hart is the nationally syndicated columnist of "From the Hart," which is distributed by the Scripps Howard News Service. "It Takes a Parent" is her first book.

Publisher: G.P. Putnam's Sons 375 Hudson Street New York, NY 10014

I checked out a few of her columns, and I tend to agree with a lot of what she says. I'm so tired of dealing with young adults who have not been taught they are not more important than anyone else.

snip>
NRO: How do we wind up with "joyless children"?

Hart: A dear friend told my husband Ben and me, before we had kids, to “decide early who will control your home — it will be you or your children — but it will surely be one or the other.” How right he was.

This doesn’t mean parents have to run a boot camp. Our homes should be havens of love, laughter, and mercy.

But we have too many “joyless children” — angry, snarly, disrespectful, roll-your-eyes-kids — because too many children control their homes and intimidate their parents, making everyone miserable. In these situations there may still be love — but forget laughter and mercy!

Unfortuntaly, the DU system only gives feedback on replies, no you never get to know how many people actually read the post but don't need to add any comment to it. It leaves you wondering if there is any value to the post, frustrating with one like this that takes time and effort to produce.

I am one of those who always appreciates seeing the BookTV schedule here, even though I am often not gracious enough to express my appreciation. Nonetheless, I DO appreciate it and offer my thanks now for your posts from today and for those in the past.

33. Likewise!
If you're around tomorrow, you might want to post a heads up about the Satire in America round table.

Vonnegut is very well loved here at DU, and the panel is terrific.

I think it may be the most exciting of all the events for the weekend. And we can all use a few more laughs these days.

31. Kick! "The Things They Carried" coming up now...
Tim O'Brien creates an intentional paradox for his readers when he writes a wrenching, violent, but gripping story about Rat Kiley and then at the end of the story, tells the reader that the characters and events of the story did not happen as he has just described them, but rather they happened in an entirely different way to other people. But he insists that the story is true. Thus O'Brien challenges the reader to discover what the truth of the story really is. O'Brien asks the reader to discover what the nature of fiction is.
