Quake is 'punishment from Allah'

Preaching from the ruins of his once beautiful mosque, the Mullah of Battal offered a simple answer to the question posed time and again since the Pakistan earthquake: why?

''Allah has sent this great punishment on account of our misdeeds," he said, jabbing a finger at the open sky. "We must now end our rebellion against the orders of Allah and submit ourselves again to his ways."

As Mullah Abdul Hayee declaimed his Friday sermon, his voice soaring with wrath then sinking with emotion, a crowd of more than 1,500 reflected on a truly dreadful week.

''We should not dwell on our misfortunes," urged Mullah Hayee. "We should give thanks to almighty Allah that we were not so unfortunate as many others who suffered even greater agonies."

They just haven't been strict enough. They just haven't sucked up to the big scary guy enough, they need to debase themselves even more. Prayer should be thirty times a day while scourging the flesh and denying oneself all pleasures. They should remove their taste buds and mutilate any part of the body that experiences enjoyable sensations.

Allah's mad; he wants us to suffer endlessly. We've let him down.
